Thread: 149 NWCA All Star Meet

The organizers appear to have taken the stance "we can't please everyone, so let's simply use the rankings." 1 vs 2. Dullsville. Someone else should start a true people's choice event.

Can't say I agree with you there. The last thing we need in this sport is more splits, splits, splits.

As a sport, we've got a small group (realistically) we're working with and with everyone doing their own thing, there's going to be more hurt than help if there is something like you've pointed out.

The small colleges did get together and start a Collegiate All-Star Challenge, mainly because a few folks complained about the exhibition matches. That's a fine event.

Would I like to see Metcalf-Schlatter? You bet. Will it be brought up? I'm sure. Will it happen? .... ???

Good point. Let me try adding a couple thoughts. How about a POST season All-Star event like in high-school? I'm sure this has been discussed. It would seem like you might get more guys willing to participate.

Also, I wish there was a big enough event to justify someone offering a high quality video feed for willing subscribers.

I'm looking at this from a fan standpoint first, but I hate to be pessimistic, but you've got people bailing out of the event before the season even starts and when they might be close to weight.

I see the point in giving an allowance, but the move from the mid-season to the pre-season actually gave the event more #1 vs. #2 matchups than it had ever had prior. The NCAA seeds are not affected (neither are the NWCA rankings -- i.e. Mocco/Konrad last year ... until Konrad won at the National Duals).

I think the problem you would run into with a post-season event is weight. Season's over ... it starts with practice in October and doesn't end until Mid-March. How many of these guys want to get close to weight and battle again after they've placed/won a title?

I think the opposite. I think you'd get less of the high caliber guys in the event after the season than before it. Injuries to Konrad and Reiter stung this year.

For an entertainment event that does not actually count....I think the NWCA should almost hold an election for the bouts. the 10 or 11 best matches....regardless of rankings.
I wish I could kick Matt Dragon in the balls. In his Dragonballz.

Thing is, before the season, exhibition or not, it's still a weigh-in. I'm with you in looking for solutions rather than pointing out problems, but what the fans want and what the coaches (of the wrestlers, not the association) want are likely completley different.

And if there was a vote, that wouldn't force anyone to the match, you'd still have bail outs, no matter if the fans voted or if they are selected like now.

I like the idea of a fan vote, but what would be the difference overall? Different matchups maybe, but nothing's going to stop the college coach from not wanting his wrestler in the event or an injury or a wrestler coming down to weight.

Reason I bring up weight is that the rules governing the Minimum Wrestling Weight and the time needed to make it (minimum weight loss per week) rules are still valid. If Wrestler A is going to go 157 this year and can't make it until the first week of December, he can't legally weigh-in for the All-Star in late November.

That goes back to the post-season debate, which in all honesty, I would not see getting anywhere near the amount of big names in the event because they're just tired and "done" for the season.

I would have had Dlagnev v. Konrad for last year if that were the case on a choice event.
