Thread: You've Got a Dilemma, Which school would you pick?

I see everyone's arguments about the Ivies, but I guess my thing was that no matter the degree, no matter the coach, no matter anything, I didn't want to be so far from my family that I would be more than a reasonable car ride away. That's just me. I'm very close with my family, and especially if I had to go through the pressures of being a student-athlete, I'd want them nearby. (Not living with them, but that they'd be able to come to my meets with relative ease.) That's why this question is so hard. There is so much more than just the wrestling programs and degrees that go into this decision.

I agree with Bluestater, and that's another reason why Michigan would be my choice. Excellent athletics, academics, and my parents are within reasonable distance if I need them and to watch me compete.

Well, I guess this is why I'm glad I wasn't an elite wrestler so I didn't have to make a tough choice like that. I never wanted to go anywhere but Carolina, but that wouldn't have been a good place for me to wrestle.

It's funny to look back and see how your/my choices may have changed. I know that without a doubt I would have chosen either Oregon state or possibly Iowa depending on how strong their team was looking and whether or not I thought that there was a realistic chance at winning a national title. Now though looking back if I had to choose for myself I would choose an Ivy league school just because the prestige that goes with the degree and I know that I could never afford something like that if I had to foot the bill.

Who's choice has changed since they were 18? Would you pick the same school today that you would have as a high school graduate?

If you're talking non-wrestling, then absolutely yes I would choose Carolina again.

Well as a high school graduate my GPA wasn't nearly where it needed to be to go to Michigan, my ACT score was but not my grades. So if I could I would change it. I started at Eastern Michigan, and didn't really enjoy my time there. But now I'm at Central Michigan and I do like it up here a lot, and I'm going into education and they've devoted a lot of money (and a brand new building opening up in a few weeks) to my chosen major so it'd be tough. Especially with how well Borrelli has built this program. But I guess it would still be UofM over Central or Eastern, as that is the holy grail to my father. Notice how I only pick schools that offer wrestling as a varsity sport haha.

I go to the OTC because I would want to win Olympic Gold

Alright, I just thought about this from yet another angle. My original choice of Cornell was based on if I was a high school senior in 2009 making a choice. If we back up to when I actually was in high school, and if I was the wrestler in the original scenario, then I would have still chosen Carolina. All the same reasons I went there anyway, plus from a wrestling standpoint it was a much better program then.

Naval Academy, 20 years ago would have been my choice. Still would.
