ROCHESTER, Minn - The Northern Illinois wrestling team defeated Northern Colorado , but fell to No. 1 Minnesota and North Dakota State, Saturday at the Rochester Duals.

"We're a young bunch of guys, and we wrestled well," NIU head coach Dave Grant said.

The Huskies (1-3) 29-5 win over the Bears included four major decision wins. Senior 133-pound grappler Pat Castillo earned a 14-4 win over Blayze Bahe, and Patrick McLemore, Michael Smith and Nick McClone also picked up major decisions.

"We got on a roll and did some pretty good things," Grant said of the Huskies' first dual win of the year.

Against the top-ranked Golden Gophers, the Huskies found success at the heavier weights. Both 197-pound redshirt freshman Jake Smith and senior heavyweight David Benner pinned their opponents in the first period. Despite their success, Northern Illinois fell 35-12 to Minnesota.

"There were some real close matches with Pat (Castillo) at 133 and Duke (Burk) at 174," Grant said.

Northern Illinois' closest contest of the day came in a 21-17 loss to North Dakota State. Twelth-ranked Burk earned a major decision, as did Castillo. True freshman TJ Wunnicke and redshirt senior Kalen Knull also picked-up wins over the Bison.

"We had some opportunities to win at the end, but didn't get the job done," Grant said.

The Huskies return to action for their home-opener against Northwestern in Northern Illinois' annual Showcase Meet, Nov. 30 at 7 p.m.
