To everyone's chagrin, it matters less where you come from, than where you go. I have to agree that Minny is the team to beat this year. If New York is so great, why do so many good ones leave to wrestle somewhere else? If Hofstra and Cornell have so much talent that they don't need to recruit anymore, tell your state champs to come on out to the Midwest and we'll find a place for them.

States with large populations AND a wrestling culture (NY, PA, OH) tend to produce more top-ranked wrestlers. I don't if its true, but I've been told that per capita, N. Dakota produces the most college wrestlers.

As far as I'm concerned, if you go to Minny, you're a gopher. If you go to Okla State, you're a cowboy, etc., no matter if you come from Iran, Mongolia, or Scarsdale.

BTW - it's 29 and sunny in CR this morning.

Easy answer. too many distractions. A school like Hofstra and Rutgers are too close to New York City where the culture is to lead a city life which goes against a wrestling life of sacrifice and hard work outside of the classroom.

Schools like Columbia and Cornell are also very difficult to get into and, once there, to juggle academics and wrestling and excel in both.

Most of the best NY wrestlers come from upstate and some schools in far Long Island. While they are kids they see no distractions since NYC is far away.

Midwest is much more laid back and simple minded. No high fashion distractions and such. Top it with a wrestling culture, generous scholarships and you can see why New York and New Jersey wrestlers go there.

Also, most of the best coaches are in the MidWest because it is cheaper to live there than close to NYC (housing and such).

You don't see too many farmers around NYC area.

FWIW, I mean simple minded in a sense that MidWestern people are not as eager to give up rural comfort for an extra buck.
