Thread: Who is the biggest threat to PSU this year?

Default Who is the biggest threat to PSU this year?

    Let's hear it!

    Who and why!

I say Iowa. They have 10 contributors, 2-3 title contenders in DSJ, Ramos and Gilman(that's probably a stretch, i realize), likely AA's in Telford, Lofthouse, Evans and Moore and potential AA's in Burak, Grothus. Dziewa should qualify and contribute. He'll require a fortuitous draw to place.

Minnesota's claim was the completeness of their team, but with 25 and 65 being complete holes, Ness's continued regression, Storleys Stagnation and Steinhaus' apparent injury gives me pause I don't see them there from a tournament standpoint. Though they certainly matchup well with Iowa in a dual.

Okey St? Oklahoma? Not seeing it.

It's like you crawled into my brain and typed what you saw. Not much in there is there?

Well, I'll take a different position for the sake of argument. BTW, how much did you see in Herkey's brain, Vais?

Certainly at this point Iowa would seem to be the biggest threat to PSU's pursuit of a 4-peat. OSU and Minn have been down lately (as recently as this past Sunday!). OU has some great top talent, but just doesn't have enough AA potential to really threaten. They'll score their share of points though.

OSU--It's not really likely. They've got an outside shot if they have the kind of tournament they had last year and almost everyone matches/exceeds seeds. But,they're not likely to have any champs this year, so they will have to make a great run through consolations and get a lot of 3rds and 5ths. They're unlikely to AA at 125, 141, 197 and Hwt. So actually, the closer I look at it, the less probably it seems.

Minn--I think a better case can be made for Minn. Starting with the Scuffle they've been down as a team. But the potential is there. The drop in some individual rankings lately lower their projected point totals. But, the upside is they have a pretty decent shot of improving on current rankings. Ness is deservedly #15 at present, but does anyone really think that if he's healthy he can't be a potentially mid or high AA--he was #2 and #4 the last 2 years? They have 2 arguable favorites for titles at 197 & Hwt. And they could easily AA at 8 weights--most of them could easily be top 4. It will be interesting to see if the move up in weights pays off at the NCAA's. They're definitely stronger as a dual team, but will the Dardaneses and Ness score as well up a weight this year? BUT for Minn to have a chance they really have to get hot.

    Themselves.

    I just don't see it...David Thorn is not elite. I don't think he'll place"

Iowa probably has the best shot to finish second but Penn State is a lock for this year. How does Cornell look as a team? I haven't seen them wrestle at all this year. Ohio State and Minnesota are wrestling far below expectation right now, teams that I thought would be right there.

Exactly what I was going to say. Theirs to lose, but if they lose some matches early I see Iowa or Minnesota sneaking up there.

Coming into the season, I thought Minnesota would be the biggest threat. At this point, I would have to say Iowa. The Hawkeyes are quite solid top to bottom. Any question marks coming into the year have been answered. Minnesota seems to have regressed, I thought they'd be solid all the way throught, but there are definite holes in that lineup right now.
