Thread: Cheeseheads Wrestling Out of State

Default Cheeseheads Wrestling Out of State

Dieringer, Askrens, Sueflohn, Zehner, Conrad, I could go on and on. I have been having a running battle on the Wisconsin Wrestling Forum about this disturbing matter. Many say it is because of grades and how hard it is to get into Madison. I guess I'm wondering if and how other B1G programs deal with the situation or if they do. Am I living in a fantasy land? Is the grade thing an excuse or is it real? How do football programs like Alabama always get the best kids regardlesss of grades? Are all B1G All Americans honor students? I see a lot of general studies majors in football. Someone please educate me. Thanks, DC

I don't know about the grades thing for wrestling. Football players probably get a pass because they bring in millions of dollars for the university. I have never heard that Wisconsin was any tougher academically than any other B1G school. I've always heard that Northwestern was the toughest academically.

A lot may have to do with the coaching staff. Some have transferred for one reason or another too. I just have never heard academics and Wisconsin mentioned in the same sentence. Is that really a thing?

Yes, I can't see academics being a factor in other B1G schools getting Wisconsin natives. I remember when Nebraska came into the B1G there were some other Big 12 schools also looking into joining the B1G. From what I heard, at least in some cases their policies didn't come up to B1G admission/academic criteria (evidently Nebraska's did). Now, possibly it could be a factor in going to a non-B1G school with easier standards like Cornell or Stanford!

I am not doubting anything anyone is saying about academics. I've just never heard of it. I would also bet that Nebraska met more football standards than they did academics. It's usually about the money and the Huskers have a long history of huge fan support for a football team that makes bowl games, therefore more money is spread out through the entire league.

With that said, the only other team I can remember trying to get in and didn't is Pitt.

Personally I think it is an excuse for letting some of the great talent get away. Madison has high standards for non-athlete admission, but I have to believe that atheletes would get some sort of pass. I've seen what other D1 schools do for their athletes as far as separating them from the regular student body in private dorms, giving them personal tutors, private study areas, etc., basically the best of everything. If Madison isn't doing this for the wrestling team and other B1G schools are, its no wonder they are struggling in the lower half of the conference in wrestling, yet the basketball and football teams are thriving.

Didn't Justin Koethe get into Wisconsin? I know he was going to go there but maybe he couldn't get in. If he did, I'd say that grades shouldn't be an issue for anyone.

Justin is on Grand View University's roster, but not the Badgers.

Right, so is Devin Peterson. Both of them were committed to Wisconsin at one time. I don't know about Peterson but the word on the street is that Koethe isn't the brightest bulb on the tree. My question is, did Justin have the grades to get into Wisconsin? If so, I can't imagine their academic standards are too high for all of those others that you listed.

Wisconsin has lost so many good kids it's hard to keep track of them all and you'll never hear the real reason. McCauley, Peterson, Koethe......... McCauley has now went from WI, to Nebraska, to Nebraska-Kearney. Are all Iowa's starters straight A students? Trying to find A students who are wrestling studs must be really hard!
