Thread: NCAA 1st Round Results/Upsets

I got a chance to watch the semis on DVR... my thoughts.

By my count, there were 11 matches where the winner scored one td/reversal or less. There were 3 matches taht got decided by riding time advantage after no offensive points- that's 11 miinutes of no scoring. That's too many The Golden Pylon award will have to be shared this year.

On a high note, they seemed to get most of the big-name finals matchups (ie the guys a casual fan like myself would recognize). Port's, Kilgore's, Ramos' and Nelson's matches were pretty exciting.

I hope Oliver and Taylor aren't hurt. Both of them seemed a but shook up when they took their injury time. Taylor came back and ripped his guy's face off. Oliver, not so much- hope he's 100% to go tomorrow.

Brown looks like a cartoon character of a wrestler- so stocky and ripped.

Man, is Delgado FAST! I can't imagine he has a lot of boring matches.

Man, did Gelagolev EVER screw up! I can't believe he did that jump-into-the-air, fall over and lay there move.

I loved Taylor's comments post- match. Something like "I guarantee it won't be another 3-2 final. There will be points!" Easier to say than to do, but it's fun that he's going into the finals with that attitude.

I think Oliver tweaked his back and said "nothing" because he didn't want his finals opponent to know he was hurt. Taylor's collecting my thoughts comment actually made sense when you consider that he hit his head pretty hard prior to taking the injury time. Finally, I know I'm biased on this, but I thought the Schopp vs. Dardanes match was BS. Credit Schopp for the turns in the second, but he pretty much stalled the whole second and third periods by tying up Dardanes right foot behind his knee to keep him from being able to do anything. Granted, it worked, but it seemed just as bad as just dropping to the ankle over and over again to prevent the escape, which gets you called for stalling. Then in the third, Dardanes was trying to cut him, and he was just holding onto his wrist for dear life from the bottom to keep from going back to his feet.

When he hit his sweep my brother(who is possibly the most casual fan out there) goes OHH! That was sweet!

So yeah, it's a complete mystery why he doesn't use it more.
To avoid criticism say nothing, do nothing, be nothing.

I'm sure that this many people do it each year (3), but always impressive to see guys lose in the first round to make it all the way to the podium in the consolation bracket.

This year it was Thorn (and to think that he really wasn't even expected to qualify from the Big 10s!), Nevinger, and Pena.

Garnett is pulling a vinson and just beating on people through wrestlebacks .I think (unsure) that vinson went his entire career w/o winning a first round NCAA match .kinda incredible .
