I've seen this match several times.

First; Owings matched up very well. Especially in folkstyle.

Second; From the get go it was apparent that Gable was "trying not to lose" versus "winning". Which was wrestling out of his style. Check out the first minute.... yeah he had heavy hands.... but he was counter wrestling.

Third; Watch Owings in this match. He was thinking, and doing things, knowing he had nothing to lose. Once he weathered the initial storm, he wrestled with composure, looking for position. Which leads up too...

Fouth; Gable choked. He had an "almost" limitless amount of natural endurance and energy. Was probably in better shape than any of us get in ever. But the pressure overwhelmed even his limitless amount of natural endurance and determination. And that led to a mental breakdown.

Obvisoulsy Gable overcame all of this. And one can't help but wondering if this improbable loss was the best thing that ever happened to him.

Well, all that may be true, but watch Owings as well. He never backed up. He was going for Takedowns the entire match and he kept trying to throw in his infamous cradle(he did pin every one else in the tourney with it, you know??) Owings said that he was coming to the NCAAs to beat Gable. He dropped from 158 where he won the Pac8 title to 142(you could do that back then) and he kept his word trying to win the match. His strategy if you can believe this........was to outcondition Gable!!!

    Tough kid.

I agree with you as well. Owings had his moment in time. It doesn't get any better than that!

I guess it looks as though as I was trying to take away from what Owings did. That is my bad. Owings won the match in every way you can. Conditioning. Composure. Strategy. And of course.... the score at the end.

An aside to all of this.... a couple of years later Gable had his famous Olympic run. No points given in the Olympics. Destroyed Keaser and others in the trials. No points and a lot of pins against those folks as well. But there was one match, against a kid who was a runner-up in the NCAA's the previous couple of years. A kid who did better thaneverybody except a Russian in the Olympics. I kid who did better than every other American in those trials. One whose style was hardly condusive to freestyle. Yet this same guy gave Gable probably his toughest test on the way to Gold.

His name was Owings. Yeah Gable won 9-1. But given how he destroyed everybody else, 9-1 over a folkstyling two time runner-up, versus Dan Gable would have seen odd against anybody except Owings.

The biggest thing, in my opinion, was that he (Owings) was in the national finals and realized he wasn't getting man-handled after the first few minutes- which is undoubtedly what he expected and what probably would have happened, had Gable not been sidetracked by the media.. Once the initial shock of the "big match" wore off, I think Owens really realized that he actually could win. Gable on the other hand started to get worried as his opponent seemed to grow in confidence from his (Gable's) inability to score at will as he had in the past.

Really an interesting match to take "a perspective look" at..
