I think people became a lot more critical of Koll after the Dual format fiasco.
To avoid criticism say nothing, do nothing, be nothing.

Oldfart, if you are talking about 3 period freestyle matches, you are going back a long ways... in my time there's been 1x5 min periods, 2x3 min periods, and now 3x2 min periods. Though I think in the 70's they hade 3x3 minute periods. That would be pretty tough to wrestle IMO,
I definitely get the impression the Brands don't like Koll, maybe particularly for his opinion on National Duals, and now this. More than anyone, the Brands would be the guys to take a firm, public stance if they don't agree with something.

Here in the Finger Lakes, opinion of Koll is positive but I wouldn't consider him to be an elevated sort of guy. Ithaca is a hippy, bohemian sort of place mixed with lots of university activities and I guarantee 99% of the people in his own town don't know who he is. This area definitely isn't Iowa where college wrestling is a bigger deal.

Arm, I guess what I am saying is that I like 3 periods for matches. It divides the match up perfectly into distinct portions. 3x3 is brutal and I think probably unnecessary; 3x2min gets it right I think. I guess at the end of the day even 2 periods is fine as long as 6 full minutes of wrestling occurs which is the key for me.

This! Although I'm a PSU fan that is neither for or against him.

I'm neither for him nor against him either but I have come to realize that he and I don't see eye to eye on much when it comes to wrestling. I also think he abused his position with the NWCA, the way he tried to weasle a change of such magnitude. I don't have anything against him as a person though.

    OF,
My first 3x3 college match i literally saw god and may have cussed him out ! Luckily I was wrestling another freshman walk on and we were both so dead we were just leaning on one another to stay on our feet .I'd have gladly let him pin me yet he could NOT move either (I could NOT even fall down on my back )-i remember winning 5-2 and puking across Assembly Hall's floor to pass out in a hallway.
Yet i also remember coach Blubaugh going off when he heard the olympics had changed the time format and he started cussing out non training cxxx cucking russians who get away with murder internationally and so on..
You know, I think I would rather be a man than a god . We don't need anyone to believe in us. We just keep going anyhow. It's what we do.

Oldfart is a misleading name, it was my nickname in high school because of my overall attitude/outlook. I am in my 40's so I guess I am starting to live up to my name, at least I feel that way. So, I can't say I ever did a real 3x3 but I did do an O.T. that went to criteria back before the days of sudden death and ride outs, which left me wanting to hurl. I lost that match on a mis-start caution! Those O.T. periods were 3x1min so I guess I made it past 9 mins, couldn't imagine doing that every match. Guys like Blubaugh truly are the gods of this sport, everybody and not just wrestlers seemed to be tougher in the old days. Probably not as skilled, but def. tougher.

I made some comments early in this thread, saying that I thought Koll was trying to be upbeat on college wrestling to counteract a spiraling down pessimism that could result from the recent olympic decision. That was based on the article that Vais posted at the beginning of this thread.

Now I've just seen Terry Brand's interview in which he makes reference to an interview with Koll. In that interview other things came out that I didn't see in the article posted on this thread, things that could be a bit more troubling. But I haven't seen those comments from Koll in print. Has anyone seen the Brands interview and the interview with Koll which were the basis for Brand's comments?
