Pingpong: Yeah, I know it's called table tennis. But anything you play in your parents' basement can hardly be considered a sport more worthy of the Olympics than wrestling

You can also wrestle in your parent's backyard, but not at the Olympic level.
Agree. This can really be said for all of the sports at the Olympic level, even pentathlon (I guess???). The athletes in every sport train hard for the event. Like the one article said, the designation of 25 "core sports" is arbitrary and just doesn't make sense, much like the widely used 100 pitch-count maximum in baseball for starting pitchers.

Agree 100% with you & ODH... We as wrestling fans know how frustrating it is when ignorant non-fans bring out homophobic statements (guys who like rolling around with each other, etc) and ones like "dumb meatheads who just like to hurt people" when talking about our sport, so why would we stoop to that level? These are all Olympic caliber athletes who bust their butt year round in obscurity for the love of their sport, they aren't the ones who made this happen. Focus on the positives about wrestling, not the negatives of sports you know little-to-nothing about.

More big outlets coming out in favor of wrestling, good writeup by the NYT:

Yes, like curling. I played hockey for a few years as a kid growing up in Minnesota, and we found curlers on the adjoining rink to us so ridiculous that we used to shoot hockey pucks at them. I found it particularly puzzling with Americans' fascination with curling two winter Olympics ago!

Pretty sure the Swedish women's curling team was semi-fascinating. They don't look like they've taken many pucks to the face.
