I was coming to start this thread. I thought Virginia Techs lower weights look very tough. Sharp on their feet with some excellent takedowns and most of all I thought they looked vicious on top. Garrnett may have his year this year, Niebert looked good also as did Dong, Yates scared me a bit but he showed he knew how to win. Now to the bad...

VA TECH'S Upper weights looked awful!!! Borlie gets a pass considering who he was up against but seriously, from 74 on it was an awful showing for VA TECH and I know you can't blame Marone from trying to win the match and get the ride, and I think the pin in that situation was closer to a fluke than to a good call and I'll leave it at that, but I just think VA TECH crapped the bed or just got it in their head from 74 on they had it won? MAJOR issues to fix up top if VA TECH wants to reach that Top 10 team level.

Kind of been the story for VT for a while, they've always been a team thats been built more around their light guys.

You are right Jensen it has been the theme Dresser as a light weight guy himself coaches his light weight guys great, but that leaves the big guys hanging not having a guy in there who can coach in the trenches of hand fighting and escapes to win matches. Just seems that Robie and Dresser would've made sure Marone knew not to get pinned no matter what and that he would've been better prepared to get a take down or at least an escape somewhere along the line...

I know I'm complaining a lot but for my home state team to have ALLLLLLLLLLL that potential and display it so well at times see the UVA dual, and then to have a massive collapse like this is just mind boggling as to how that staff can allow that to be the end result of all of that work.

You gotta think, though, that the Va Tech coach is telling Marone "Whatever you do, don't get in a position to give up the fall!"

what did you want Marone do to ? He could have let Thoms escape in regulation and lost by a point . The pin was a fluke ..

I didn't want him to purposely lose, but I also didn't want him to allow himself to have a mental error at a crucial moment and give up the fall, not only losing the match for him self but the dual for his team also.

I'd really want more than anything for him to have committed to a shot once or twice more and to have somehow mustered up an escape... or honestly once it was in the 4th or whatever it was OT I'd want him to go to a tight waist ankle a hold on if he loses he loses but the team gets the dual.
