Very cool...very telling of the kind of competitive spirit the Brands' brothers have for the sport and winning.
Great read, thanks for posting.
Tom and Terry truly are a class act. Recently a friend of mine, whom our new fantasy league was named after, was in a bad car accident. Our hometown wrestling club was planning a benefit for him and his family to help pay for the many thousands of dollars of medical bills they will have. I had a print of Carver that I wanted to get Gable, Tom and Terry to sign and sell it on the auction at the benefit. I drove to Waterloo and had Gable sign it. He was very gracious and talked with me about my friend at length about his accident. I then emailed Tom to see if it was alright if I brought the print to wrestle offs to have him and Terry sign it as well. I explained that I did not want to turn wrestle offs into an autograph session because I know it is a busy day for them. Tom told me not to worry about it and just find him when I got there and we would get it done. When I got there I found Tom and he took me back to his office and went and found Terry, who apparently was in the process of tearing apart the weight room. They both signed it and talked with me about Jason. I am very thankful and appreciative that they took the time to help my friend out, who is an assistant wrestling coach for our high school. I got the feeling that if wrestle offs weren't going to start in just a few minutes they wouldve talked with me about wrestling for hours. The print brought $375 at the auction. Those two and obviously Gable truly are ambassadors for our sport.
Yeah... poor Terry Brands, he has lost some truly epic matches in his day. That trilogy with Cross, and his close loss to Dabir at the Olympics (if I remember correctly he actually had a winning turn, but had it overturned as an illegal move) are all time classics.
Mind you, he also won a world title very controversially when Gia Sissouri was cautioned out while ahead, so maybe it all balances out.
Very enjoyable article. Thanks, Herkey, for sharing your story as well. People in their position can make a big impact on others. Sounds like the Brands brothers are seeking to do so. Good for them!

Dabir scores big early and gets tired late... Brands turns him with a reverse legride at the end but it is waved off. I'm not quite sure what the rules are regarding that move and potentially dangerous situations (I know our coach was very wary of us trying it in practice); I do know the US protested the match but without success.
I'd always wondered how the Brands brothers were ambassadors for Athletes in Action and other faith based initiatives given their reputation for brutality and poor sportmanship; I guess stories like this explain why. I'm glad to know they are both good guys.
