I really dont understand not redshirting Hunter and basically wasting Paddocks senior season especially since Ian won the wrestle off
1) Paddock is actually a junior
2) Hunter beat Paddock in the finals of an open tournament (probably a more important reflection of performance then a practice room wrestleoff)
3) Hunter has FAR FAR better results against other wrestlers. Paddocks only real win of significant in college is the wrestleoff vs Stieber. Stieber beat three of the top 4 guys in the country last year and was an AA.
4) PAddock is rumored to be injured
It makes more sense if Paddock is a junior. I always thought this was his last year. Im willing to bet that Hunter red shirts next year then.
If open tournament results matter more than wrestle offs, then they mine as well just not have wrestle offs because they'd be pointless anyways
It's not that open tournament results matter more, it's that the wrestle off isn't the only thing the coaching staff considers when deciding on the starter. Those wrestle offs are as much for the benefit of the fans as they are a tool for the coaches. In most cases to unseat a returning starter, especially one with the credentials of HS, the coaches want to see the challenger show that he's clearly better. As the result from the UB open shows, as well as I'm sure plenty of live action in the room, Paddock isn't clearly better. Also, as Lost pointed out, Paddock hasn't beaten anyone of AA caliber aside from the one win over HS. Paddock is just in a tough spot, but I'm sure he'll get some matches and it's nice for OSU that they have some proven depth in the middle weights. As for next year, I don't see Ryan using a redshirt for Hunter unless there is an injury. He's the type to put the best guy on the mat. If that means starting a guy for four straight years and not using the redshirt, so be it. The last thing he'd want is to use the redshirt, then have Hunter get hurt early the following season. Didn't Minnesota get stuck in that situation with CP Schlatter? For some reason I remember them using his redshirt, then he got hurt and he ended up spending the rest of his career constantly rehabing and never being able to just take the time to get back to 100%.
