I suppose this as good a place as any to stop lurking and start posting.

I have Dake over Taylor. I think that this summer training with the world team probably has him in better shape heading into the season then he normally would be and also gave him some experience that has brought his confidence even higher. I see him winning by being more physical and frustrating Taylor with his strength and defense. 5-2 Dake.

Welcome Pickles? I also have Dake over Taylor. I watched Dake now for 3+ years and he just seems to rise to the occasion of the big match. I think he loves the spotlight. I also think Dake's style is really adaptable to whatever his opponent is doing as he is very solid on his feet, and a hammer on top. I can't recall the last time he has been turned or put on his back but its been a long time. If Taylor can't produce back points I really don't see him beating Dake in this match-up. The big question then becomes does Dake go back down to 157 or does he stay at 165 and force Taylor to make a move to get that second title? I don't want to say Taylor can't do it, he's too skilled to think he can't get in on Dake and finish but I've seen Dake scramble as well as anyone in collegiate wrestling as well and I think he has the ability to make Taylor pay for his offensive aggressiveness if he forces it. Really can't wait to see this match-up. Good luck to both competitors.

I have been thinking Taylor thus far but this post has changed my mind. Taylor better on offense, Dake better on defense; I now think the scrambling will be the deciding aspect of this match and I agree that Dake can catch Taylor out of position and make him pay, much like their freestyle match.

I don't recall ever seeing or hearing about Dake getting turned in a college match (although Paulson got him pretty bad in their FS match). That makes it possible that the last person to get folkstyle backs on him may very well be Ian Paddock of all people, during the state final their junior years.

My greetings as well, Pickles. I lurked for a while before starting to post a while back. It's a pretty good bunch here at TWT. You're definitely with the conventional wisdom, certainly fueled by Dake's impressive showing in their OT match last summer. I'm in the minority that thinks DT will win. I think it will suit DT just fine to have others expecting Dake to win. It should be a great match, but I think DT will surprise some people. Strange to think of DT surprising people after just a few months ago getting the Hodge award.

Who has Dake wrestled that was a really good rider/turner? Dake is usually the one doing the riding, and I don't think he has met someone like him. Molinaro was Mr Highcrotch, but he didn't do much on top until his senior when Dake was in a different weight class (and Frank would not have held Dake down had they wrestled that year).

Its just too hard to pick against Dake at this point in his collegiate career (free vs. Taylor notwithstanding). His style invites less mistakes, which is by no means saying Taylor isn't a technically superior wrestler. Dake - but close and not a lot of scoring.

As I think some others may have already noted, I think a lower scoring match favors Dake and if it ends up being higher scoring, DT is more likely to come out on top. I think it will end up being higher scoring.

Dake wins, and simply because of the fact that he is better, and has better wins. Dakes finals are Marion, Molinaro, and St. John. Taylor stared at the lights against Bubba and beat who? Hatchett!! Taylor is good, but the unicorn has to beat much better competition before crowning as superior to Dake. And yes, I do understand that Taylor beat St John multiple times too. Plus the way Dake manhandled Taylor at trials this year just cannot be ignored.

I guess I may as well jump in here too.

I think what makes this match so exciting is that Dake is great because of his defense and DT is great because of his offense. Two completely opposite wrestlers. And I agree with oldfart that this match will come down to Dake's scrambling ability. I just believe that Dake's defense is too good for DT to make this a high scoring match. given Dake's scrambling ability, powerful stand-up, and riding ability, I cant see DT taking Dake down multiple times, or turning him. DT may be able to take Dake down, and he may be able to escape, but he wont be able to take him down at will and score a lot of points from his feet.

So, if this is going to be a high scoring match, then it would mean that DT will be able to turn Dake numerous times. I dont see that happening either.

That's why I think this will be a low scoring match. And I give the edge to Dake because I believe his defense is better than DT's offense, and that Dake will be able to control the match.
