Not to seem hypocritical, but that happens in almost every basketball game, whether UNC is involved or not. There also seems to be a lot of basketball players who perhaps attend the same acting schools as punters...

Good point, what goes around comes around, I guess. But Caldwell was softening up Ballum at the beginning of the match. There must have been a tactical reason for it, not sour grapes at the end of the match!

I'm not stupid. I know it happens a lot. But many of the shots against Hansbrough the last 2 years have seemed much more malicious & intentional ... even more so than those against other Carolina players I've seen over the years.

    Well, it IS Carolina.....

But then again I don't watch enough basketball to know who takes cheap shots at who, or is that whom.....

Because we are wrestlers and we don't turn our backs on issues in our sport. We are not like baseball. We don't put up with stupid stuff just to bring more spectators out.
Everyone has there opinion on the incident, and I think both should have been rep'd. This is to nip that stuff in the bud. To me anyway.

I can see where they are coming from, but in all fairness shouldnt they also issue a reprimand for the stomp on Robles?

Good point...but......Sanders and Robles settled that issue before they left the mat..........Sanders was out of line......he knew he was out of line......he appologised on the spot and Robles accepted it.
To my mind that is a big difference.

The picture of the Metcalf "push" is in sports illustrated magazine, so it got a bunch of exposure beyond just wrestling fans. That might be one reason the NCAA felt the decision to issue a reprimand.

Will there be any practical consequences for Metcalf? Hopefully this reprimand encourages NCAA wrestlers to clean up their act and improve their sportsmanship a bit.

I wonder if all the coverage of The Shove is a factor...

As pointed out, THE coverage of the 2009 NCAAs in Sports Illustrated was a photo of The Shove. (Once upon a time, SI devoted up to four pages on the national wrestling championships. These days, we're lucky to get a photo.) Even the Wall Street Journal had a brief article about The Shove. A number of non-wrestling blogs weighed in, mostly in negative terms (assuming that college wrestling = training ground for WWE, or that this is proof that college wrestling = barbaric, violent sport).

I think it's safe to say, that for most folks who aren't avid amateur wrestling fans, the only news they got from St Louis was at two extremes: the positive coverage of Anthony Robles, and The Shove (which, to my way of thinking, is hard to put a positive spin on that).

Now more than ever, college wrestling can't afford negative publicity. I sense that the University of Iowa realized that, and asked Metcalf to issue a formal, public apology. I sense that the NCAA realized that, and issued a public reprimand.
