    Default Sunderland Update

    http://www.collegian.psu.edu/archive...s_unclear.aspx

    No comment from TS and Curley...clearly means something is up.

    When met at his Port Matilda home Sunday evening, Sunderland told The Daily Collegian he had no comment on the Bluewhite-illustrated.com report as he talked outside his house.

    Curley said he had no comment when reached by telephone Sunday.

    "The word was that they gave him two weeks, so if it's true, it's supposed to be two weeks," Jenkins said. "But I don't know."

    It's Sad really. He had a very young team this season, coupled with injuries on the squad, and they finish 17th. They finished third last season for cripe sakes. PSU is NOT a wrestling powerhouse. They aren't getting Iowa, Ioaw st, or Michigan recruits. PSU also has to compete with UPJ, Lehigh, Clarion, Lockhaven, etc...all PA Powerhouse Wrestling schools.

    BJ Compton is a 4x Virginia state champion who will be wrestling for Pat Pecora at UPJ this season. This is what PSU has to contend with in terms of recruiting.

    On a personal note, Sunderland had 25 Penn State Wrestling Posters signed by each member of the wrestling squad, which we gave to our youth wrestlers as Wrestler of the Week awards. My son recieved a poster...he's 7yrs old...and he tells me that he wants to wrestle for Penn State. He wants a PSU wrestling singlet for Christmas.

    Someone tell me how THAT isn't recruiting?

    Coach Sunderland. You're a damn fine coach, and a fine person as well. Whatever happens, keep your chin up.

    Ok, but why isn't Penn St. a wrestling power house? If I were a Penn St. alum, I would not accept that. Pennsylvania is one of the best, if not the best, wrestling state in the country. Except for Edinboro, no Pennsylvania school has been in the title run for years. Lehigh, Clarion, Lockhaven? When was Clarion's last AA? Lehigh hasn't been the same since McCoy left. Penn St. competes in the Big Ten, is the flagship school of a strong wrestling state and has amazing facilities. There is no good reason why they shouldn't be in the title hunt every year.

    Coach Sunderland might be a good man. I can't comment on that as I've never met him. But seriously? He should be contending with Iowa, Ohio St., and Iowa St. for recruits, not UPJ. Quite honestly, a loss of a Va. 4x state champ isn't so much a loss for Penn St. as it is for UVa and Va. Tech.

    bluestater is dead on. PSU's facilities are among the best in the country, and they wrestle in the best conference in the country. Those reasons should allow Penn State to recruit itself in PA and surrounding states. With the money the school invested into the facilities you can't blame the school for expecting more.

    "Former Nittany Lion head coach John Fritz said he read an article that ran in the Centre Daily Times on Saturday that said Sunderland addressed the team at practice Friday, but did not check any wrestling message boards or blogs."

    ha ha, Fritz is great. He calls message boards "the blogs" and says he hopes he dies without ever having been on one. I wish he'd come back and coach!!

    Sunderland = Great guy
    Sunderland = Average coach

    No hard feelings Im sure, but PSU has got to demand more from their recruits. They get great recruits. These recruits dont perform. Why is that??

    I have my own feelings as to why these recruits dont pan out. 50,000 students, a party every night on every block, huge football games, hot tail everywhere... Its hard to keep a 18/19 year old kid on the straight and narrow under these social conditions. IMO, its all about oversight. These kids just may need professional chaperone's.

    Thoughts??

    Like that's any different from some other schools in the Big Ten?

    You are probably pretty young, and you might listen to sports talk radio.
