"Marginal" must be in the eye of the beholder. 10-8-1 in duals with the aforementioned level of competion for dual duals. For example, Hudson Taylor wrestled over half of the other NCAA qualifiers at his weight.

Even in his redshirt year, Mike Letts met 9 of the NCAA qualifiers at 174 and had a 7-3 record against them (he wrestled Robertus twice).

As stardust mentioned, Maryland didnt win the ACC dual championship in a conference with very weak dual teams. I would consider that pretty marginal, yes. No need to get defensive I like Maryland, I'm just saying that their post-season is a lot more like what I was expecting from them then their pretty tepid regular season.

Hmm, in February a lot of folks were going on about Va Tech, with a very young team, beating Central Michigan and Michigan in duals. There were those who were casting votes for American at the time Maryland beat them.

Considering what Maryland faced with injuries, redshirts, and defections we had a successful dual meet season. I'll try this again for you. Maryland had losses to Edinboro, Nebraska, Iowa, Missouri, Oklahoma, Lehigh, North Carolina, and Va Tech. With that sort of schedule I don't think "tepid" is an accurate term.

For compaison, take a look at other 8 loss teams in Wisconsin, Michigan, and Northwestern. They were all ranked top 20 in the final NWCA poll. But since they are from the Big 10 they get the benefit of the doubt while losing to schools like UC Davis!

It wasn't the season we anticipated at the start, but our strength of schedule showed when it was post season, which is where Coach McCoy was pointing the team to all season. If everything works out next year Maryland will have four guys who are capable of reaching the NCAA finals and a total of 8 who are all american/round of 12 caliber wrestlers. That might be good enough for a top 30 finish....

I remember well another time that the ACC emerged nationally, despite what the cynics thought. You weren't around then. I see it happening again with a lot of talent at the majority of the ACC wrestling schools. The level of talent and strength of schedule was recognized by the new qualifier system this year. At some point others will recognize it in the very near future.

you do have a point those are some quality losses, except for North Carolina.

I guess I just thought they would be this years Lehigh or Boise State and they werent during the regular season, but they definitely had a successful ending.

Agreed, we just had too many holes in the lineup to have a realistic chance against the level of competition we faced. Next year's team should be a lot of fun. I got word that we may be competing at the National Duals next year. See if we can do some damage there.
