Thread: Nickerson to Iowa State

I'm kind of surprised that Cornell didn't want to hire Nickerson. Do they already have a lightweights coach? I don't know how many paid coaches the Ivy League allows--maybe they can't have as many as other D1 schools.

In addition to Rob Koll, Cornell has Damion Hahn, Jeremy Spates and Mike Grey on staff.

I don't know where Nickerson would fit, and I don't think there are many coaching staffs that rival Cornells. Each guy has such a varied and specific skill set. Surprised Hahn and Spates are still there really.

That answers my question. Is Jeremy Spates a lightweight like Jack Spates (former coach of Oklahoma, I believe)? If so, they already have 2 lightweight coaches, along with Grey. Obviously no room for Nickerson. But Nickerson would have been available before Grey (at least he graduated earlier).

Spates is a middleweight sized guy I think.

Nickerson was doing the freestyle thing and might not have wanted to get into coaching until after giving the olympics a shot.

Grey doesn't seem to have any interest in senior level freestyle. I'm sure if Nickerson wanted the position(a few years back) he could have had it.

Its interesting how the attitude towards KJ has kind of soured for a lot of people.

I remember his first year people (especially non-ISU fans) swore that he was going to take the program to soaring new heights in comparison to their previous head coach.

Yeah, that wasnt me. Herkey swore up and down he was going to do well and just needed time Hes since scaled back.

I was never sold and never thought he could do as well as Cael did at ISU.

Admittedly this is a homer's perspective.

I would have preferred to have Cael stay. However, it is what it is and I still believe in KJ, but if I don't see some good improvement this year continuing to major improvement in the next I will probably lose faith.

I have always like KJ but have never been sold on his staff until now. With Travis and Nickerson as the assistants and solid senior level guys like Trent and Reader, I think he's finally built a solid staff.

If the injuries can get under control I think ISU climbs back to potentially competing for titles.

Hs staff is solid, but how much of their actual time is in Ames devoted to coaching? Paulsons and Reader are still competing a decent amount it seems.

I was sold on him. He was a great motivator at first. Said all the right things. Now I realize he is all talk and no walk. Borderline blowhard.
