Default Was Caldwell V. Metcalf Really great?

I have read countless times about what a great match this was.

I honestly couldn't disagree more. The only reason it is even in question is because of who it is and what an "upset" it seemed to be.

In my opinion it wasn't a great match at all, caldwells headlock was the only moment of excitement. It was never really close, you were always waiting for metcalf to do something to tighten it up, and he couldn't. Great matches IMO are mcilravy v. abas, lang v. caldwell, rohn v. lambrecht(there are countless others obviously) If this was Kyle Ruschell v. Mitch Mueller nobody would talk about this at all. I don't believe in the logic of "it's because who was wrestling" can make a match great. I think it made lots of people happy, but this doesn't make it great.

I agree with you somewhat. There most certainly have been better matches, even in this NCAA tourney. What really made it great was the participants. However, there were quite a few good scrambles as well as the headlock, and the unfortunate shenanigans at the end of the match that did make this a very good match IMO.

I pretty much agree with this. I think it was a very entertaining match (from my perspective) given the excitement around it, but in a vacuum, there's nothing special about it. It probably would have been a decent matches to watch no matter what, but it needs to be close for it to be a "great" match.

I also think the people who say it's one of the biggest upsets in NCAA history (the announcers) are definitely over doing it.

Agreed Gold, there were bigger upsets in the first round of the tourney this year IMO.

Eye of the beholder, I guess... It was one of my favorite folkstyle matches to watch, even though I didn't really care who won. The defensive scrambling by Caldwell did it for me.

I thought that 133 and HWT match were better matches. Caldwell scored the upset, but the match was pretty one-sided.

One of the few good matches of the finals.
Caldwell was excellent and hit some great moves and had great scrambles.

The main argument against was that was not that close. If we were all unbiased, we would have thought Caldwell had it locked up early (How many finalist come back after giving up two takedowns in the 1st?) However, Metcalf's status made it exciting the whole time becasue it seemed that he should come storming back like he did last year.
