Default .......On to the Hodge Award

Gents, Caldwell has the best stats, it's a question of whether they tag him for sportsmanship and the cartwheel. If they take the end into consideration, it'll be Herbert.

    ...................Wins......Pins.......TFs....... .MDs

Caldwell.......38-2.......17........3............7 (losses include Tf by Metcalf at All-star and MF against Terry)

    Herbert........34-0......15........4............7

    Burroughs...35-0.........2........5............15

    Luke............32-0........4........2............8

Life's not the breaths you take, the breathing in and out that gets you through the day ain't what it's all about. It's the moments that take your breath away.

Like it or not, Caldwell's default is an official loss. Not sure how the committee will look at that. Add in the fact that he was losing 6-1 at the time, and I think Herbert is going to get it.
You do the math..... I'll do the alfredo!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!

Caldwell officially has a loss......Herbert doesn't. Caldwell got the oW at the NCAA which was a toss up between he, Herbert and Burroughs. I suspect that Herbert gets the Hodge. frankly, his finals match with Pucillo wasn't as close as teh score. He got 2 quick TDs and then just frustrated Pucillo by countering some great shots.

Hard not to agree with you, I was using stats from ESPN and they ignored the default loss. Even on the tube they flashed his record as 37-0. That alone could be enough to make the award to Herbert.

The Hodge will belong to Herbert. Caldwell has that loss - but even more importantly, even though Caldwell had every right to celebrate before the match was over, and he clearly did - it's not the type of behavior that the "best wrestler" in the country is given an award for. An award given in that context would simply cheapen the award.

Caldwell has time, he may very well win it yet next year. This year it's Herbert.

I don't know if Caldwell deserves the Hodge award,.. only based on the default loss you all mentioned. I did not know about it. Aside from that, I don't see why he doesn't DESERVE it. The thing about it is, like everything else, college wrestling has it's "heroes." Herbert is one, Metcalf might as well be the Micheal Jordan of wrestling right now. I feel Caldwell was disrespected during the entire tournament, never mentioned unless it was the fact that he beat Metcalf. He handed everyone he FACED a loss and he was the last and only man to beat Metcalf. Anyone who watched the semi's saw Caldwell utterly destroy his semi's opponent and dominate Metcalf in the finals match. Personally, I don't think his celebration was excessive. He did a backflip, not the first time I've seen a victorious wrestler do that. Out of one side of their mouth the announcers say, it's the biggest upset in college wrestling history. Out of the other side of their mouth, a backflip is excessive celebration. I just think Caldwell upset the Cinderalla story of the tournament and his celebrating was salt in the wound. Unfortunately, it will probably cost him the award he deserves.

they didn't care last year when metcalf had an even more legit loss than a default even though there was another undefeated wrestler. That looks like a coin toss though, and herbert being a senior apparently will help.

Herbert deserves it. There wouldn't be any discussion about it if they hadn't blown tradition to the wayside last year by giving it to Metcalf.

Caldwell doing a backflip has absolutely zero to do with winning the hodge. Zip. Zilch. Nadda.

The bottom line is that he has a loss and Herbert doesnt, and therefore it would be ridiculous for him to get it given how dominant Herbert has been this year. Even if he hadnt lost to Terry its still hard to see them not giving it to Herbert who has been just as dominant as Caldwell wrestling a B10 schedule, and is also a senior who has yet to win the hodge.

I do think Caldwell will be in the running next year at whatever weight he competes at.
