Which is why I said "possibly."

Let me clarify: Andre Agassi is the greatest meth-using, wig-wearing, george-michael-5-oclock-shadow-having tennis player of all time!!

Agassi may not have been the GOAT, but nobody ever quite made people love him like Agassi did. Andre is my personal favorite, if you can't tell.
Zapp--Have you read Agassi's autobiography entitled "Open"? It's a phenomenal read, excellently written. He did get someone to help him write it which he must have, because it's superbly written. In that book he recounts that epic match and he really leaves you spellbound with the drama. I highly recommend that book to anyone, but particularly to Agassi lovers. I wasn't so keen on Agassi in his early-to-mid years. But wow, he really changed as his career moved along. The books relates what was going on inside of him during that time. The biggest thing that he repeats over and over again in the book--that he HATES tennnis! The books explains why. [By the way, I need to write this disclaimer--I don't get any royalties on the book!]

Vais--Now that I've read your post too. You need to read Agassi's book because he goes into all of that. You really get a feel what all was going on in his often troubled life. It sounds like he and Steffi turned out to be a really good match (and not for tennis reasons).

I've read that book and highly recomend it too. Andre was my favorite tennis player but imo Samprass was the GOAT. I quit watching tennis after they were done playing each other though. I can't appreciate it unless there is an american at or near the top.

Another thing about US tennis. I'll be surprised if we win another Davis Cup in a long time. The format allows each host country to choose the surface and Americans no longer play much (and certainly not well) on clay. So all another good country has to do is choose clay on us and we're toast. To win the Davis Cup we would have to win twice on clay, which is next to impossible any more. Since Chang, Agassi and Courrier left, we just don't have any clay court players. I grew up playing on clay, so am surprised at how the US has abandoned it.

I play tennis now to kind of supplement my workouts. I really enjoy the sport. Its very inexpensive in relation to golf, a pretty good workout in the 90 degree, 90 percent humidity weather and I find being pretty decently quick on the courts at age 40 make we somewhat competitive. I have no formal training but that makes me unpredictable.

gofer--I haven't seen you post in a while. Now I know why--you've been playing tennis! I agree, it's a great way to get exercise in a fun way and you only need 1 (or 3) other person/people. It does help to have people that play at roughly the same level.

During the summer I play every Friday morning. I'm not as quick as I was in HS, but still quicker than those I play, which does help a lot. The thing that really bugs me is that right when I finally get my serves going good and my backhand starts creating angles, the summer is just about over. I'm too cheap to get a membership to a club where they charge you a monthly fee plus court costs. So I am left to sit out the winter months and start from scratch come summer. UGGGHHH!!

BTW- I agree the Aggasi book was excellent. I would also recommend the Monica Seles book. It gets very in depth about her mentally. I don't want to ruin it, but you'd be surprised at how insecure one of the world's top athletes can be. Plus the whole stabbing incident is covered. Her meeting with Rulon Gardner was pretty cool too. He sought her out at the Olympics and said what a fan he was of hers and he ended up turning her into a big fan of his.

I noticed the other day that just about every thread that's been started since the end of the season has been hijacked at some point. I believe this site could be called the wrestling talk for those with off season ADD.
