Thread: Flores... should have stopped this semi's match

Default Flores... should have stopped this semi's match

I am just appalled that the coaches and refs allowed this man to continue in his match during the semi's. Our sport needs to take better precautions at protecting the wrestler, I know its a big moment for an individual to be in the tournamant, it only happens so often for young athletes, but this kid has his life in front of him. With all of the tell tale signs (Which were so brutally evident it was hard to watch.) they kept letting him continue. There is no shame in calling the match for his safety, and the coaches need to get that across to young athletes when there is potential for life-long damage to someone's health. The athlete is always going to say he is fine. Look for the signs and do whats best for his future.

I agree, in my mind there was absolutely no doubt that he had a concussion. I'm all for pushing past joint pain, ignoring a muscle tear, wrestling on a broken foot, even taping up a bad cut, but a brain injury is different. That match should have been stopped.

Totally agree! That was painful to watch. I came in late to watch the match and thougth it was some kind of a joke at first. Flores had to have been seeing triple. He couldn't even figure out which guy in front of him was Rey and which ones were his imagination. I felt bad for Rey as well. You could tell he didn't want to hurt him but knew he was in trouble. Did Flores default to 6th?

The blame in this instance falls completely on the officials and Flores' coaches. Either of them could have stopped the match if they felt that it was unsafe for Flores to continue.

If the ref didn't realize Flores was out of it, he had to have been drinking! Is he the same ref that didn't call the takedown Oliver got? Probably!

Can the ref stop the match in this scenario (meaning the wrestler, coach and trainer all say he can go on)?

Also, IIRC, it seemed like the ref gave him an additional injury break later in the match. It sure looked to me like the ref was worried about the kid and came up with a reason to stop the action and very slowly (like 30+ second delay) get them restarted while pretending to address a technical issue.

Yeah, I'm not sure if the ref can stop it. It sucked bad but that's a terrible call for any coach or ref to make. Doesn't make it right of course, but I honestly can't say I wouldn't do the same thing if I was Moore and my 5th year senior is in the NCAA semifinals and the trainer said he was OK.

When I officiated (HS not college) I had the ability to stop the match at any time if I thought that the safety of a wrestler was in danger.
