Ahhhh, Jimmy Carr from Erie, PA. HS Olympian in 1972. Did you know he barely won his weight class at states in 1973? It was close the most shocking upset ever perhaps - a first time state placer almost beating a returning Olympian. At the State Farm Show Arena, Larry Kepp from Central Dauphin East got behind early, but not too far, down 7-1 after two periods. Kepp escaped early in the third, took Carr down and then cut him. Behind 8-4 with a lot of time left (well over a minute to the best of my recollection), Kepp pursued Carr relentlessly. He got a warning, a stall point and another stall point and there was still plenty of time. Kepp kept at Carr and the crowd was screaming for the two points for stalling, which never came. Nor did the takedown. Kepp lost 8-6 but if you look at the champions photo, Carr still looks like someone who barely escaped with their life. Unbelievable match.

Thanks for that story, Steve. Didn't know that story, even I though I go back to that time. Sounds like Carr was so dominant that he didn't get himself into proper shape!

I think it was more that Kepp became a force of nature and the whole crowd (nearly) was behind him and very loud. He was a local kid (Harrisburg suburbs who wrestled in our league up through my junior year) wrestling above his head the whole tournament (districts, regionals and states). With the crowd behind him in the finals match and Carr on the ropes, he became a terror.

When they handed out the medals, Kepp got a standing ovation; Carr polite applause.

They had some good programs at one time--some that shined were Tennessee, Kentucky, LSU and Auburn. Florida, I know, had a team, but can't remember if they were very good or not.
    You are welcome.

Kevin Jackson was at LSU before he transferred to Iowa State. Auburn had some AAs. I think Tenn did. Florida beat Penn State one year in the late 70s.

Joe Atiyeh Hailed In Syria, Allentown A Hero's Welcome - Morning Call
Joe's brother Dennis played DT for the Pitt football team as well. Dennis, a PIAA heavyweight champion in 1981 while at Allentown Dieruff, began working out with Jerry Rodriguez, a two-time PIAA champion while at Saucon Valley, John Connelly, a former Central Catholic standout, and a couple of guys named Brown - Bernie, who wonPIAA titles in 1980 and 1981, and Mike, a 1976 state champ in order to make the Syrian team like his brother, after he quit FB. Both of the Browns went on to successful careers at Lehigh. Dennis later got busted by the Feds for something.
