Badcat, Penn's population is 13 mil, Iowa's is 3 million. With more then 4 times the population size it absolutely SHOULD have a large margin of quality wrestlers over the state of Iowa. Even at per capita it should have a higher probability of gathering more quality wrestlers.

We've already gone over this, as Pittsburgh and Philly are easily the largest cities in Pa, and Philly, the largest city by far isn't a wrestling area and inner city Pittsburgh isn't either. The WPIAL's strength is outside areas of the city where the catholic schools reside.

After its all taken into account, Pennsylvania has the largest pool of talent no matter how you look at it. Cael is recruiting PA, Ohio, Jersey, and NY. 4 states who make up more than half of the total Qualifiers in the entire nation. Penn State is winning because Cael is keeping these boys close to home and keeping them out of the hands of Iowa, Iowa state, Oklahoma, etc.

Badcat is right, this has been covered. Iowa has a lot more kids wrestling in HS than PA does. I was very surprised given the total populations.

The numbers are pretty astounding. Four of the top five qualifying states are PA, OH, NY and NJ (missed #4 by 1) representing 135 of the qualifiers. PA the leader by slightly more than double speaks volumes.

Thanks for posting that KR. I remember all those names. Looks like they had 4 AA's in 1977. A shame the SEC dropped out completely from wrestling. They had some good programs at one time--some that shined were Tennessee, Kentucky, LSU and Auburn. Florida, I know, had a team, but can't remember if they were very good or not.
