This. We need more casual fans. I think that the wrestling community tends to shun others that may not have wrestled, and that is not what we need. Sure Nationals puts butts in the seats, but we need more Iowas out there that consistently put people in their stands for home meets and for other meets that they show up at. Will we ever get there? Dont know, but we need to make wrestling more main stream.

I don't disagree with anything you say, but it seems to me there is a small group that should be an easier sell. I don't get why most ex-wrestlers have so little interest in following the sport.
Part may be that Olympic wrestling is a mostly unfamiliar sport to them and they do not have any understanding about FS so there is no momentum from an Olympic year carrying over into the development of the next generation of international wrestlers.

As an ex-wrestler who still follows the sport, I can sympathize with the others who don't. I live in the Cincinnati/Dayton area and there is no college wrestling around. Columbus is a 90min drive at least. So, I go to all of my nephew's tournaments. That means at least a 6-8hr commitment on a Saturday in HS bleacher seats. It is brutal. I get up to walk around and stretch the legs and back and guess what? Nothing to do but stare at walls. None of my wrestling friends have kids who wrestle or even nephews, so they don't go. I don't blame them.
I agree about not knowing the rules and scoring of Olympic wrestlers for former wrestlers. That's what keeps non-wrestlers away from folkstyle so it is no surprise that it keeps folkstylers away from FS. This could be an opportunity for some people in the FS community to ask for a few minutes during breaks at folkstyle tournaments to get out their with microphones and wrestlers and teach the rules and scoring of FS. They could do it during breaks in HS tournaments as well as college tournaments. They could mention some wrestlers to watch for and what the big moves of each wrestler is. Basically, go to folkstyle tournaments and get those there to know and get interested in FS.

Isn't Mount Saint Joseph's in Cincinnati? Do they still have a team?

Good call. I forgot about them since '05 when my daughter's friend was wrestling for them. But, I was really talking about D1 teams. But thanks for reminding me, I have to get back over there for a dual or two.
