I respect Andrew Hipps for writing the article, I respect Cael Sanderson for who he is as an athlete and for his ability as a coach. I completely disagree with the opinion of this article however and still don't understand Cael's decision not too attend. I understand his stance in that he he already had a commitment but his stance seems to be that he doesn't REALLY support the event and given the chance he won't go next year as well. He talks about what's best for his team and I guess I understand that as well however if the sport continues to shrink and consolidate there will be no more team to coach. He talks about growing the sport and helping smaller programs which is outstanding but coming up with innovative ideas and getting the sport in front of larger crowds I believe is going to be a bigger part of helping smaller programs in the long run.

I believe the sport is in a tenuous position and that the successful programs need to take the lead in bringing the sport to the masses even if it means rescheduling a dual or missing one home gate receipt.

I respect Penn State as a team, they seem to be a group of classy kids and focused athletes but I can't help but think when the National Duals Championship is being wrestled that they won't think they should be there gunning for the title.

I've seen very little criticism compared to that which Iowa got last year. I think all the top teams should participate weather it's the best thing for thier program or not. I agree with Cael and I think this format sucks, but I also think they should be wrestling in it. A better article would have been one wondering where all the outrage is compared to last seasons with Iowa.

Oh, poor Cael...reminds me of a super bowl joke I heard.

Tom Brands dies and goes to heaven and is greeted by God, who shows him to his new house – a cozy, modest home with a Hawkeye flag flying from the porch. “Gee, thanks God!” says Brands, feeling very special.

As Brands walks to his door, he notices another house down the street – a sprawling, gorgeous home with a 50-foot pole flying a Penn State flag, a swimming pool shaped like a nittany lion, and a Cael Sanderson t-shirt pinned to the front door.

“Um, God?” Brands begins. “I’m not ungrateful, but I don’t get it. I won more team championships, Cael only has one. Why does Cael Sanderson get a better house than me?”

God chuckles. “That’s not Cael’s house,” he replies. “That’s mine.”

I'm not sure why Cael should be exempt from criticism considering the criticism that Tom Brands and, to a lesser extent, John Smith have taken for the exact same decision. Personally, I have no problem with it for any of the guys.

Everyone is free to criticize, this is a discussion board. But I think we are seeking to understand, not just criticize. We're trying to get into Cael's head (and the coaching staff's, because they all came to the decision) and determine why PSU didn't go. Cael has given a number of reasons which we can believe or not. Listening to the interview it sounded pretty clear that Cael/staff strongly disagreed with the approach/format for improving wrestling. They have a philosophical disagreement over it and think it hurts other more effective ways of trying to help the sport. You can agree with them or not, but the interview totally squares with what one of the coaches told me many months ago. In the interview he also didn't rule out participating in the future. Again, you can disagree or not. But personally I'm very satisified that they made their decision based on more than just what is in PSU's personal interest.

As I've said before I sure wish PSU was in it. I would love to see them square off with all the other top teams. Many are saying that the current set-up is flawed. Hopefully a necessary corrective can be made. I think a 1-weekend format has got to be part of the solution.

I appreciate your opinion TW. And agree PSU being there is my #1 interest. I have to say though that him not agreeing with the format and offering no alternative sounds really weak. Fine don't come this year when you clearly have the target on your back but then as my 8 year old sons Little League says, "If you don't like what you see, volunteer".

Brands did deserve more criticism. Iowa was a normal participant in the national duals. The national duals were minutes down the road from Iowa City BECAUSE Iowa fans always came to support their team. It would be similar if I was putting on a concert and know that Aerosmith bring in the most fans so I hold the concert near Aerosmith's hometown. For the first four years Aerosmith attends and brings their fans making the concert a huge success.....but on the fifth year - Aerosmith says no thank you, We're going to go play a concert in a small Iowa community college instead, but good luck with your concert!

I am disappointed they aren't there but I understand Cael's reasoning.

Idea: Get the NCAA to hold the National Duals in ONE weekend the same weekend of the BOWL GAMES & hold it in a Bowl City where fans already are. Make it as a part of the football season build up. Get it included in the national media as a part of bowl week.

    What do you guys think?
