Thread: Wrestling vs Basketball attendance

    Default Wrestling vs Basketball attendance

I started to write this on the thread talking about where to have NCAA tourneys, but thought it better to start a new thread.

When I was growing up in State College, PA we would get more people to a HS wrestling match than would go to the HS basketball games (despite having a 2-time all-state basketball player on the team). I don't know if that is still true or not. I wonder how many schools can say that they get more to a wrestling match than to a basketball game? Iowa is well-known for its wrestling fans. I would be interested to know if you have many schools that get more to a wrestling match than b-ball? I'm simply curious to know. How about elsewhere?

Since you said HS matches, I am assuming you are asking about HS only. Based on my nephew's schedule, I can say that he doesn't have any 1-on-1 wrestling duals. We used to when I wrestled back in the late 80s-early 90s, but now it's alway 3 or more teams at a dual. That obviously bumps up attendance and the gyms seem really cramped, so you think that there is A LOT of people there. But once you notice that the far side of the gym has it's bleachers folded up to make room for the mats, you realize that it's still not as crowded as a BB game. Tournaments have more people there than a BB game, but it's 16-22 schools so it's not really the same.

But I can say that the Franklin vs Carlisle (Ohio) River Cup Grudge Match does completely fill a big gymnasium for just two small schools. It is really a nice site. They wrestle for an old wooden barrel that the winning school puts on display for the entire. They are both very small, redneck/hillbilly schools who's borders butt up against each other, so it's a natural rivalry. Pretty much every kid in each HS attends with tye died t-shirts and placards. It's really cool to attend. But it only happens once a year. After that, empty gym except for parents, siblings and the few girlfriends who don't mind sitting in a cramped gym for 8 grueling hours to see a 6 team dual.

HS wrestling really needs to get more fan friendly by having more dual meets. I don't know a "casual" fan who wants to spend 8 hours on a Saturday in a gym to watch wrestling, especially if you're only there to see one kid.

Interesting, Quinn. I have been really out of touch of the HS wrestling scene--haven't been to a HS match in decades. But it was surprising that you don't have 1-on-1 duals, but all having multiple teams competing. I wonder if that's true in other parts of the country.

In answer to your question I would also be interested if there were any colleges that get more for wrestling matches than b-ball games. I thought HS might be more likely to do so; that's why I specified HS.

I don't know what Iowa is averaging for basketball games this year but I can say that wrestling has outdrawn basketball on average during the past few years as Iowa has been terrible at basketball. Iowa is however the exception to this rule. I would doubt that any other school could claim the same.

Penn State definitely could for at least the last 2 years, IF they count actual attendance. I bet we have all seen the difference between "announced attendance" and the actual number of people at basketball games.

The reason is the same as Herkey mentioned for Iowa.

I think if PSU wrestling had a few matches a year at the Bryce Jordan Center they could definitely close the gap. I'm sure a PSU-Iowa match could draw 10,000 and other big meets like Lehigh, Minnesota, and tOSU could draw 8,000.

BBL or Burnsie--Do either of you know what PSU basketball attendances are like these days? If they're less than 6,000 (actual attendance) then wrestling would be higher.

I don't know what the actual attendance is, but the announced attendance from the box scores seems to run 4-6k for non league games and 7-9k for B1G games. But again, that's just what's in the box score, probably not representative of the true number of butts in the seats.

I was at the PSU-Iliinois game a couple weeks ago. I would have ball-parked attendance that night at about 2,500, maybe 3,000. Honestly, it looked like less but since it is a big building, I'm going to bump my estimate. 6,000 would have been right about half full and I am sure it wasn't that. It was a poor showing and would have been absolutely embarrassing if the students hadn't made a good showing on Dollar Dog Night.
