Mark Ellis for Mizzou was not top ten coming out of hs. I think he was only a recruited walk on.

Here's an interesting story that is kind of coming full circle at this point. Kilgore was a legit recruit coming out of high school. Not top-ten pound for pound, but top 40 for sure. Big recruit for Kent State at the time.

Anyway, there were three excellent upperweights coming out of Northeast Ohio that year: Kilgore, Honeycutt and John Weakley.

It was Tom Ryan's first year recruiting for Ohio State, and he put together a top-ranked class (Sponseller, Nemec, Triggas, Bo Touris, Ryan Patrovich...). The upperweight they went after was John Weakley.

    Where are they now?

Kilgore is an NCAA Champ and #2 on the US Olympic ladder, having beaten former tOSU studs Bergman and Rowlands.

Honeycutt is undefeated for the second regular season in a row with an excellent shot at an NCAA title (in my opinion).

Weakley? He lasted a year at Ohio State, then turned up at Oklahoma, and then disappeared. Or did he?! No! Weakley, now wrestling for the Citadel, was just named SoCon Wrestler of the Week for beating Joe Budi. That's an honor Kilgore and Honeycutt will never be able to claim.

Matt Powless -even tho he went 51-0 his SR. year with 33 pins he was unknown outside Indiana . As a Rs freshman he moved to 197 for the team and went 20-14,then 30-15, 39-8 and AA, currently 24-3 and just moved into the top 10 win department at IU.

Yes, I believe Phil Davis never won a HS state championship and turned out to be a 4x AA, including NCAA champ. Was Steinhaus a state champ?

Great example--exactly the kind I was looking for. Did he never place higher than 4th? Wow!

No, he was a state champ in Ohio.

Rankings wise he was only 4th in his weight class nationally, like Gold mentioned most places had him ranked around 40th overall coming out.

I think Weakley is at Campbell?

Pat Christianson from Oak Creek, Wisconsin wsa 3rd in sectionals his sr year...didn't go down state and was National Champ for UW. Kevin Wilmot was upset in Sectional for Rhinelander and walked on at UW and was Big 10 champ and 4th in NCAAs. John Peterson didn't go downstate, was low AA for UW-STout and had a pretty good career after college. Ben Peterson was Second in state and 2 time NC 4th once and had pretty good career after ISU. That's for starters!

P.S. Jack Reinwand of Wisconsin Rapids was 3rd in state and National Champ and 4th for UW
