Thread: OSU National Duals Regional

    Default OSU National Duals Regional

After Ohio State beat Iowa I was pretty concerned about this potential matchup. Today I took the time to see what the "paper" says it will look like.

125: #16 Jon Morrison vs #14 Johnni Dijulius
133: #2 Jordan Oliver vs #3 Logan Stieber
141: #13 Josh Kindig vs #5 Hunter Stieber
149: #2 Jamal Parks vs #10 Cam Tessari
157: #9 Albert White vs NR Josh Demas
165: #20 Dallas Bailey vs NR Derek Garcia
174: #4 Chris Perry vs #7 Nick Heflin
184: NR Chris McNeil vs NR CJ Magrum
197: #9 Blake Rosholt vs #20 Andrew Campollatano
    285: #3 Alan Gelogaev #14 Peter Capone

This is using TOM rankings for this week. Things could change with OSU wrestling Missouri and Ohio State and Michigan and Michigan State. I'm assuming Magrum has been out with injury and that is why he is not ranked here. Is listed in the lineup for this weekend. He is as high as 10 and low as 18 in other rankings. In any case, enough that he is the favorite over McNeil.

This isn't as tight by the rankings as I was expecting. Of course, if in addition to 125, 141 and 184 Ohio State gets the tossups at 133, 165 and 174 then it is a bad day in Stillwater.

Perry vs Heflin is a good measure of where he is at in the 174 hierarchy. Not much going to get in the way of Oliver and Stieber being the match everyone wants to see.

If Nebraska can again beat Ohio State the rankings again favor OSU in a big way, but take away the exciting tossups. The only one there would be between #8 James Green and #9 Albert White.

A lot better matchup than PSU for the bucks.

Certainly more winnable, but OSU is pretty stingy with handing out wins in GIA. Going to take a lot for them to win all three tossups. This match will take place several hours after weigh in so both Oliver and Perry should be feeling better than they would if this were the first dual of the day.

The 133 is huge--one of the best remaining match-ups wondering who will win? I have to go with Oliver, but he isn't quite as invincible looking as before. A great match-up!! Would love to see it live.

This dual has a lot of matches that could go either way. The only weights where I would say there is a prohibitive favorite are:

141--tOSU, I just don't see Kindig beating H Stieber; 174--OSU, I don't see Heflin beating Perry if he's wrestling as well as his ranking. Heflin mostly beats the people he should, but doesn't beat the top guys; 184--tOSU if Magrum wrestles; if not it tips strongly to OSU; Hwt--OSU by MD or TF.

Otherwise I could realistically see the other matches going either way.

    125 Morrison 3-0 OSU
    133 Oliver 6-0
    141 Stieber 6-3
149 Tessari 6-6 (this is my mild upset special; Parks doesn't dominate, and Tessari is dangerous)
    157 White 9-6
165 Garcia 9-9 (predicting this mild upset to keep score close!)
    174 Perry 12-9
    184 Magrum 12-12
    197 Rosholt 15-12
    Hwt Gelogaev Md 19-12

Should be a good one if tOSU gets revenge on Nebraska!

I expect a lot of people will predict Parks to lose here. He is always a popular choice to be upset.

Kindig has been so uneven lately. Barely showing up for a Friday night dual and then dominating come Sunday. Can't see him winning here. Morrison, on the other hand, hasn't much shown up. Maybe he can get comfortable at the weight for this last month or so, but it isn't looking good so I can't consider him likely to win.

I've never been big on Jamal, but picking him to lose to Cam Tessari is a little ridiculous.

Tessari's best win so far this year was over Nauman, and as good as Nauman was down at 141 he isn't on Jamal Parks' level up here at this weight.

Well, you can't just stick with favorites all the time--upsets occur and you've got to pick some. I've been impressed with tOSU's freshmen and coming out and getting some big wins. H Stieber's win over Russell is the biggest won, along with L Stieber's 7-0 dismantling of Ramos. Then Garcia (who hasn't looked good this year) beat Evans who has really been coming on. So, I'm predicting that it's Tessari's turn to get a big win. Granted, an upset pick. When I picked both Stiebers over Ramos & Marion it didn't look too likely to most either.

He also has wins over Dylan Ness and Josh Wilson, both of whom are ranked higher than Nauman. Tessari's schedule has been crazy in that he really hasn't had many cake matches at all. Quality opponent after quality opponent.
