Default 2012 Mid Season All American Predictions: All Weights Posted

First set of these will be out later this afternoon. Managed to get a lot of good work done on these yesterday and am gradually growing more comfortable with what I think.

As always post your own, tell me who should be in mine, or call me an idiot who is bound to be completely and totally wrong. All options are acceptable and encouraged.

Shane, I like your picks pretty well. I would put Perelli at #5 ahead of Bedelyon. I hope that Megaludis can move higher than #8, but I think that's reasonable at this point. I also pick Zanetta to make R12 in place of Finch.

Those are mine. Bedelyon already punked Perelli and Perrelli handled Megaludis twice so that is why I put them there. On round of 12, just gut feelings there. Ryak Finch faces AA's week in and week out so I think he'll be tough come NCAA's.

They look pretty reasonable to me Gof...I too hope Megaludis moves up a spot or two, but its hard to find justification for that given his current results.

McDonough came out this year as the pretty heavy favorite here in this weight class and thus far has had a very similar start to this year as he did to last year. He came out and had some matches where he beat the guy by less than you would expect him to beat some of those opponents by, and this year he even dropped a match getting four pointed in overtime to lose a match to Jesse Delgado. Last year he seemed to start to get into a groove right around Midlands and he seems to be well on track to doing the same thing this year as he dominated his way through the tournament this year pinning Jarrod Garnett in the finals and hasn't looked back since. Other than the win over Garnett he's got a major over Morrison and then wins over Finch and Patterson. He's impressed me with the way he's seemingly taken his top game to another level this year. Maybe I'm not paying attention (or I hadn't in the past) but he seems like he's scoring more points from top than in year's past.

Despite the fact that he's undefeated, ranked #1, and just had a dramatic 14-13 comeback win over the only guy to beat Matt McDonough this year, I've got Sanders here in the #2 spot and that match against Delgado sticks out more to me as evidence for keeping Sanders here rather than moving him up to the top of the list and I say this as someone who would want nothing more than to see Zach Sanders on the top step of the podium this year. Frankly its rare to find a top guy that you can go down 9-2 to early on and then come back and beat unless you're a pinner which Sanders isn't. To get off this negative kick though Sanders really has had an excellent season so far, as I mentioned he's undefeated and currently ranked #1. He's got two wins this year over Sprenkle, and then other wins over Perrelli, Megaludis, Snyder, and Waters. The Waters win in the finals of the Scuffle was a nice display of Sanders' very underrated top game as he rode out the entire second period to provide a riding time point that won the match for him 1-0.

I mentioned in my pre season picks that if Alan Waters was able to find some offense from his feet this year that he was going to loom as a guy who was capable of taking things to the next level and positioning himself as the leader of the pack behind Sanders here at this weight and so far this year he's done that. He had a headline win earlier in the year when he majored Nic Bedelyon 12-1 in a match that he just dominated, he picked another win up over Bedelyon yesterday in the Virginia Duals finals. He's got other wins over Finch and Perrelli. Has a tough schedule within his conference left including a dual match against Patterson and then another likely meeting at Big 12's. If he's able to navigate that and get the #3 seed he'll wind up as a real finals candidate come NCAA's.

Despite the big loss to Waters early in the year, Nic Bedelyon has come out this year and been super solid for Kent State. He took a step forward last year in terms of his consistency and in my mind he's done the same thing again this year. So far this year he's got a pair of wins over Perrelli both coming in tournament finals defeating him in the finals at both the Body Bar and Las Vegas tournaments. Then he has other wins over Delgado, Bonanno, and Patterson. I mentioned in my pre season picks that Bedelyon's ability to score on top gave him an advantage against some other guys at the weight but its been negated a little in my mind by Waters starting to score from there as well.

I mentioned when I picked Waters over Patterson in my predictions before the season started that I liked Waters more despite the fact that Patterson had beaten him twice last year, the fact that Patterson was an All American last year, and the fact that they're guys who do a lot of similar things because I thought Waters had more upside. Thus far I think I've been proven right this year as Waters has taken things to another level while Patterson has remained more or less the same guy. Still wrestles hard, still struggles to score from his feet sometimes, still at his best on top when he's riding legs. So far this year he's got shut out wins over Finch and Morrison.

I considered Jesse Delgado for one of my R12 spots before the season got going but wound up discounting him, my mistake. He's come out so far this year and recorded one of the marquee wins of anyone in the country when he won the already mentioned dramatic overtime match over Matt McDonough in Carver Hawkeye Arena. He's got other wins this year over Sprenkle, Patterson, and Mele all of which came during his 3rd place effort at Midlands. Missed out on another match up with McDonough when he got pinned by Jarrod Garnett in the quarter finals. Despite the win over Patterson I've got him here now, waiting to see if he can stop letting big matches slip away like the match against Garnett or the aforementioned match against Sanders. He does that he's got a lot of upside here at this weight class.

Frank Perrelli has come out so far this year and displayed a much more consistent level of wrestling than he did during the first half of the year last year. Consistent enough to where as I began to put these picks together I realized I really hadn't thought about him much at all this year as he had just been doing what was expected. He beats the guys he should beat, and loses to the guys who should beat him. So far this year he's got a pair of wins over Bonanno and Megaludis, and then another win out at Las Vegas over Michael Martinez.

I had Jon Morrison here until about four hours ago when I decided to bump him out of this slot because in my mind he still hasn't approached the level he was at before he got hurt at the end of the year last year, and because I just like Nico's upside here at this weight as the year continues to progress. He wasn't listed in my pre season picks but that was primarily a function of my being unsure whether or not he was going to actually wrestle. He's been tough so far. He's strong both on his feet and on top. He's got wins so far this year over Snyder and Levi Mele. With his motor I think he continues to improve and gets himself on the podium so long as he's able to avoid being physically overwhelmed by some of these older, larger guys.

Shane--I love this thread that you have several times a year! All of us are shooting a bit in the dark at the beginning of the season (especially with new freshmen) and it's fun to see how summer, pre-season and mid-season picks vary. Plus you do a great job putting us up-to-date on who the leaders have beaten and lost to. I know you have to put in a lot of work to put this together and I/we sure appreciate it!

    Not bad.

I see Jesse Delgado exceeding your expectations.
