Default Post Midlands/Southern Scuffle NCAA Team Predictions

With the two big early seasons just finished, it's time to make some too-early predictions for the NCAA tournament. How do you think your team will fare, and how will they get there?

Reasonable predictions are encouraged but not required...

Last year, Penn State won the NCAA tourney with 1 first, 2 seconds, 2 thirds, 2 R12, 1 scoring 0.5 point, and 2 NQs. In addition they had 6 pins, 1 TF, and 3 MDs, getting them to 107.5 points.

Here’s how I think they do this year:
2 First, 2 Second, 2 low AA, 3 R12, and one not scoring at all. For bonus, I’ll guess 6 pins, 3 TF, 5 majors. Depending on my math and where wins come from for lower placement, that should put PSU at about 118-120 points; a little more than last year, and enough for the team victory.

Here’s my breakdown for the team (I have included Intermat rankings for comparison):
    Molinaro (1), Taylor (1), Ruth (2), Wright (5)

    • · Best Likely Case: All four take First
    • · Worst Likely Case: Two First, one third, one fourth
    • · I’ll go with: 2 first, 2 second

    Megaludis (13), Martelotti(un), Alton (10), McIntosh (11), Wade (8)

    • · Best Likely Case: 4 place, 1 R12
    • · Worst Likely Case: 1 place, 2 R12, 2 dnp
    • · I’ll go with: 2 place, 3 R12 (ouch)

Pearsall (unranked, but Bonson still is!)

    • · Best Likely Case: R12
    • · Worst Likely Case: goes 1-2
    • · I’ll go with: Scores no points – this should balance out any bias I might have in other placers (like martellotti not stepping up, etc.)

So worst case for PSU is 2 champs? 1 of those champs who has to avenge a pretty dominant loss from last year that he's yet to avenge?

I'm of the opinion that Ed will win this year but to consider it worst case scenario and not involving him losing limits credibility.

Worst case for Penn State is 2 champs? Good for them!

I feel the same way I did at the beginning of the season: Penn State, Iowa, and Oklahoma State are the best tournament teams. Minny is better as a dual team.

I think that its still way too early for NCAA predictions, but I agree with Zapp on this too. Iowa, PSU, and Okie State I think will be fighting it out come March. One thing to consider though is that it is only early January, and we are only through Midlands. A lot can change. Honestly, who would have thought Iowa would have finished as strong as they did last year after placing 4th in Midlands last year. Things can and will change.

Note I went with worst likely, not worst possible.
Obviously worst possible would be no first place winners. I'd say my picks should be accurate plus/minus one.

Of the four, I think Taylor is as close to a prediction lock as there is at any weight. Of the other three, I can be honest and I think realistic in saying it would be surprising if none of them got a first. Molinaro's weight is not that strong this year. Ruth should only be challenged by 1 or maybe 2 guys. I think Q is the least likely of the group but he did it last year, going through all of this years challengers.

I would have said my lower placers might be more optimistic (none of those five lower than R12) than my prediction for my top four guys.

    Fair enough.

Megaludis and Martelloti not getting on the podium this year. 133 might not get qualified by PSU.

Just watched Quentin, he looked awesome. Hard to pick against him at 84.

I think Megaludis has a shot to make AA, but I think he would need a favorable draw. I think the best he could do at this point is probably 7th or 8th. I agree that a r12 finish is probably more likely right now.
