Thread: Midlands vs Scuffle

    Default Midlands vs Scuffle

OK, since I have no life I decided to do not such a quick analysis of the Midlands pre-seeds vs the Scuffle brackets (http://www.thesouthernscuffle.com/im...rn_Scuffle.pdf).

I used the latest Intermat rankings as the baseline to compare the two fields. I know you might get somewhat different results if you use a different ranking source, but that's how I did it.

IMHO it's not even close. The Midlands brackets are much deeper at most weight classes and there are a few that are totally lopsided (125, 133, 149, 165, 197 and HWT) in favor of the Midlands. Obviously there are some excellent wrestlers in the Scuffle, but the depth of the brackets aren't close.

Intermat rankings are in parenthesis, wrestlers are listed in seeding order. I only list those wrestlers that are ranked, so some weight classes do not have all seeds listed.

Midlands has many more teams than the Scuffle so it has to be expected that there will be more competition there largely due to the sheer number of teams entered. Look at 125: ND St and EMU will have no bearing on the team race, but they happen to have decent wrestlers at a few weights who add to the overall depth. I think the Scuffle has a better concentration of teams, but Midlands is just such a big tournament with so many schools attending that it is going to be better just about every year.

OK, obviously there is a character limit, so I'll do one weight class at a time.

OK, I give up. I have no idea why my post keeps getting truncated. The character limit is stupid. If you want to read my original comparison just go to this link:

I think it depends on how you define which is toughest. I agree that Midlands has more ranked wrestlers/weight on the average than the SS. They also have a lot more entrants I believe. Their non-collegiate wrestlers also add some more depth. At the same time a good number of high ranked wrestlers didn't show at Midlands (will the same thing happen at the Scuffle?). But in terms of team championship, the SS is a lot tighter with 3 top 5 teams. The SS also has 5 #1 ranked wrestlers vs 2 #1 wrestlers at the Midlands. Both are solid tournaments though.
