Default The Incredible Growing Kyle Dake

Reading the Dake article on the front page of themat.com prompted me to go back and watch Dake's finals match against Marion.

    Two things really struck me:

    1. How in the world did Marion not get a TD on that shot in the first period? Maybe one of the ballsiest and incredible body-control things I've ever seen by Dake. By all rights, that should have been 2 and more for Marion, but Dake...just wow.

    2. Dake was huge. I mean, REALLY big. We all knew he was struggling to cut weight, but you can really see why here. He looked almost TWO weight classes bigger than Marion. Incredible.

#1 is very cool just for watching, but for actual discussion, I think Kyle Dake's ridiculous body growth is more interesting. As big as he looked for 141 that year, he looked EQUALLY AS BIG for 149. And now, this year, I've felt he looks as big for 157. That is, he looks like an enormous 157.

What do you guys think? Is this type of growth in college WHILE maintaining this level of success unprecedented? This is unreal. He will probably go up AGAIN next year, also. Pretty incredible story that often gets mentioned but rarely gets discussed, if you know what I mean.

If he takes home 157 this year and then goes up again to what should be an absolutely loaded 165 class as a senior, God that would be an awesome story.

It's quite possible he wins a title at 4 different weights. Unreal.

He would have Howe to contend with next year at 165, but I think you see Taylor move up again to 174. It's been said he's still rapidly growing and Ruth won't be able to hold 174 again, most likely.

That would be quite an accomplishment if he were to become the first 4 timer to do it at 4 separate weights. That's unreal in college.

At NCAAs last year, I was stricken by how huge he was. After the finals, the champions posed for a picture. A little before that, he and Quentin were standing next to each other talking. The were both long, with roughly the same thickness. The only difference was that Wright was an inch or two taller--but Wright was the tallest champion if you look at the pictures.

Dake was absolutely massive at 149. I think he would have been a good sized 157.

Matches like that are why I love watching wrestling. I'd love the see a rematch, but with Dake's growth, it can't happen, at least not in a good way...
