My thoughts pretty much verbatim when I saw this thread.

Would still be fun to see.

For the record Ben Askren is possibly my favorite wrestler of all time.

Those who remember my "Greatest of _________" threads that I've done in the past should remember that he's up very high on my list as well.

Doesn't change the fact that Burroughs wrestles the exact style that has given him trouble.

If you had seen Wade Schalles (maybe you did) he might have been your all-time favorite. Askren is a modern version of Schalles.

So I'm told. Not much footage of Wade unfortunately and he was a bit before my time.

Schalles made a quantum leap between his junior and senior years in HS. His junior year he lost in the district finals to a kid from my HS who was decent but not great. Then according to rumor, he trained all summer with an eastern european pinning expert and developed all kinds of funky pinning moves. His senior year he pinned almost everyone. In the States the defending champion was a bull of a wrestler named Chatman (I believe). Both guys had pinned their way from sectionals to the state finals. Chatman (who later wrestled for Pitt) was dominating, leading 5-2 in the 3rd period, riding Schalles hard, when all of a sudden Schalles pulls an elevator and in a few seconds has Chatman pinned. Rec Hall went wild. Schalles' career only went up from there.

Ah, how I remember the verbal beating that I took when I told folks that Burroughs would shell Howe before their first match against one another. "He can't be beaten by anyone! He just won the U.S. open," etc, etc.

I said then what I'll say now: there's no defense against quick. Burroughs blows people off of their flat-footed feet. Pure and simple...

There's one match vs Kemp posted on the "good matches" thread.

A folkstyle match between these two would be pretty wild but I think Burroughs would win for the reason you mention. In a freestyle match Askren would get trainwrecked.

Howe didn't get shelled, he lost 10-7. Burroughs was never in real danger, but he didn't put a bunch of distance between them, either. I believe, excluding escapes, it was 3 TD's and a reversal to 2 TD's and a stall point.

Burroughs would struggle mightily with Askren in Folkstyle. Heck, he had a tough match with Jordan Leen, who did...somewhat similar funky things to Askren. In Freestyle, obviously, Burroughs would walk through Askren.

    Folkstyle, though, give me Askren.
Jacob Schlottke---Gone too soon, and the world is a little less bright because of it. RIP, brother.

One, two, Evans is coming for you...
