DC is my choice. It would be a nice feather in your cap to say you beat 1 of the best wrestlers ever in the Finals of the NCAA tourny.

In 3 years we might be saying JUST that about what Bubba did.

I don't know-DC beat the hell out of Metcalf . I think DT would take Bubba 4 out of 5 matches . there was nothing cheap about DC's AK he handed Metcalf -one of the premiere wrestlers of the decade.

I think we need to distinguish 2 things on this thread--and I feel responsible for introducing the confusion. The original thread topic was: whose career would you rather have? I've gone on record as saying Bubba in the way he went out (compared to how Caldwell went out). But the 2nd question that I raised was who was the better wrestler? Since Bubba beat him fair and square the only time they met--that's a good case for Bubba. But, despite that win, I feel that Caldwell's overall career was more impressive. To note he beat Metcalf twice, someone that Bubba could never come close to for a whole match. Bubba did start well two times against Metcalf but then Metcalf wore him down both times and ended up winning handily. Another time or two Bubba wasn't even in it.

I don't think we should judge their career soley based on how they fared against Metcalf either. I know he the wrestler who set the most recent standard, but Caldwell and Jenkins wrestled many more people than just Metcalf. (and Taylor).

Herkey--I agree with you fully. I didn't want to write everything down, so limited my post to the Metcalf comparison. But throughout his career
(except for injury) Caldwell showed more consistency--not losing to people he shouldn't. Caldwell's freshman year he made it to the NCAA quarterfinals losing one phenomenal (short) bout with Ryan Lang (if you have a chance to watch it--it's incredible action for as long as it lasted). Bubba's freshman year was adequate, but nowhere near NCAA quarterfinals. Bubba's sophomore year he gets to the finals and beats Caldwell in semis. Give that year to Bubba. Their junior years Caldwell wins it over Metcalf in the finals, and Bubba loses both of his matches at the NCAA's. Injury may have played somewhat of a factor in that, but I don't think that was the principle reason (someone who knows more can straighten me out on that). Bubba's senior year was super in the ending--but he had his down moments losing a couple of times to Hall and also to a Div 2 guy early in the season. Caldwell was undefeated his senior year when he had to default at the NCAA's. So--over the whole career I think Caldwell had the better career. Bubba certainly had his moments (more than just his win over DT)--but he was more up and down.

That's a longer version of why I think overall Caldwell was the better wrestler.

    1. Bubba was definitely injured. It was worse after he wrestled MEtcalf at Big 10's. At NCAA's, he was a shell of himself.

    2. I think it's misleading to say Caldwell was undefeated his senior year. While technically true, he only wrestled like 12 matches.

Zapp--I'll grant you both of those points. Agree also that in Caldwell's 12 matches he didn't wrestle anyone very good. Still believe Caldwell was the better (more consistent) wrestler over his career.
