High school success (not just in wrestling) depends a lot on physical development (some people get "man strength" a lot earlier than others) and the quality of coaching. At the higher levels the playing field evens out a bit, as all athletes have reached physical maturity and have access to top-notch training and instruction.

I would say that 5th is pretty damn good considering he only wrestled for three years. Had the the opportunity to wrestle that other year he would've surely garnered the other 15 pts to pass Varner for the #1 spot since he averaged 20 pts a season anyway.

I think he already had his to do about that in the thread that was posted when those rankings were initially released last fall.

If it were his first year at Iowa then I agree 100%, but if it were his true freshman year like Schlatter then I don't think he would have been top three. Granted, Varner had the benefit of a redshirt year before finishing 2nd at NCAAs.

I don't remember that thread or what I wrote back then. It would be interesting to see if my opinion has evolved or regressed. I'd say it's probably less harsh now since I'm older.

The general belief of Oklahoma State fans is that Iowa gets the #1 guys while we get the good guys.

I would say that Iowa and Oklahoma State are about even when it comes to getting good recruits. However I think Iowa traditionally gets more out of the guys that aren't the cream of the crop.

This just proves my theory. We say the exact same thing about Iowa. Will a 3rd party please mediate?
