Ironically, I read this post after a few beers, to which I now conveniently shall attribute my error.

As the years go on, I'm not even sure if I know what the word "ironic" means anymore, but I'm pretty sure that your post could be described as "ironic."

I think a score of 5 on my AP Lit exam qualifies me to explain the 3 forms of irony for everybody that is confused

Dramatic Irony- When you know what is going to happen in say a play but the characters don't. i.e.- Rosebud was his sled

Situational Irony- What has happened is the opposite of what you expected. i.e.- David Taylor getting pinned

Verbal Irony- What you say is the opposite of what you mean. i.e.- I am a great fan of the Hawkeyes

Then I DEFINITELY don't understand the term anymore (or, maybe I never did).

So, what I pointed out with Zapp is NOT irony then, correct?

Isn't your example of verbal irony actually sarcasm?

Your situational irony definition is slightly off. It should read more like "when actions result in the opposite of what you expected". David Taylor getting pinned was not ironic in any way. If David Taylor purposely tried to get himself put into a cradle so that he could counter, but then he got into a cradle and was pinned - that would be situational irony.

Your definition reads as if "I rooted for the Steelers to win the Super Bowl and then they didn't. Ironic." That's not ironic.

I think this is a slightly better definition: The essential feature of irony is the indirect presentation of a contradiction between an action or expression and the context in which it occurs. (from dictionary.com)

I think the limit is now .08 everywhere, I think I just read that somewhere (WSJ maybe?).
