Thread: UNI Panthers

    Default UNI Panthers

UNI will start to turn the corner this season. This is roughly their lineup for the next season. Help me out Ban. I could be wrong on some of this but want to talk about it.

125 Levi Wolfensperger, Fr/ Joe Colon, So/ Ryan Jauch, Jr
133 Joe Colon, So/ Joey Lazor, Jr
    141 Seth Noble, Fr
149 Clay Welter, Fr/ Mitchel Johnson, Jr
    157 Clay Welter, Fr
    165 David Bonin, Jr
    174 Brice Wolf, So
    184 Ryan Loder, So
    197 Joe Johnson, Sr
    HWT Blayne Beale, Jr

In this years freshman class they will add Cody Caldwell (157), Cody Krumwedie (285), Blaze Cabell (184) and Tanner Hiatt (149). Schwab is really getting a lot of good quality in state kids. They just recieved a committment from Dylan Peters (125) for the next season. It's gonna be fun to see UNI actually be competitive as a team again.

Side note: The last I heard was that Christian Brantley was having medical issues and probably won't be wrestling this year. That was a while ago though. I hope his condition has improved and he is able to join the team again.

Ok here's something I never really understood: So many hawkeye fans LOVE UNI, maybe not as much as the hawks, but they really cheer for them and want them to do well. Meanwhile they hate ISU. It would seem they should both be rivals.

Schwab is doing a fine job of recruiting.

Interesting comment, my brother went to UNI and I went to Iowa, my three cousins went to ISU. I agree with your assessment. ISU is the demon, UNI is the friendly neighbor. Perhaps its because UNI has never been considered a serious threat to Iowa Wrestling. It's a beautiful little school that has a rocking campus.

What's not to love about UNI? They seem like a natural #2 team for Hawk fans. Plus, I lived in Cedar Falls for a few years, was enrolled at UNI for a semester and went to classes for a third of a semester. It was a great party.

As for the wrestling team. Theyre constant underdogs. Hopefully that is changing. I always get my tickets and sit with the UNI faithful at NCAA's. I've had a couple of friends that wrestled there...Maybe that's it. Iowa usually has the cream of the crop from the state and UNI, in the past has gotten the less heralded guys. Guys from smaller schools that maybe we watched because they were in our conference or had some other close connection. They now have two kids from Waverly/Shell Rock and one from Denver/Tripoli. Both talent rich towns with lots of wrestling tradition located just ten and twenty five miles north of Cedar Falls. Before Schwab was there they, off the top of my head, never had anyone from those schools. That part of the state has great high school wrestling in Iowa. Can't wait for the Panthers to land more of those kids as long as Schwab remembers to leave the Mike Kelly's of the world to Iowa.

That's what I would have said, but you beat me to it. ISU and Iowa (as you all know better than me) have had quite a rivalry going back with ISU getting the better of it at times (more in the past). I can't recall UNI beating either of them, although I'm sure it must have happened sometime. Many were excited watching Cornell's rise in recent years because it was something very new (unless you go way back before all of our times). If Cornell keeps putting in high finishes that enthusiasm by others will certainly wane. Maybe if UNI starts getting highly ranked teams and occasionally knocking off Iowa, the Iowa fans won't like them so much!

I think UNI is the bigger threat to Iowa this year than ISU. Of course that's not the traditional trend.

Once again you're right, but the odd thing is I still find myself pulling for UNI. Hey, Doug Schwab is a great coach. Although they are a bigger threat, we won't be staying up late worrying about impending doom coming from Cedar Falls.

I love UNI, but they will never beat Iowa. They will however, be beating ISU on a regular basis starting next year or possibly this season.
