People may talk crap in the spirit of one team vs another but I've never heard a foul word spoken about any panther athletes, especially wrestlers. For the most part they are good people and most teams would love to have the quality of individual that usually represents UNI wrestling.

50 years ago they not only had more NCAA team titles then Iowa but also more total NCAA Champs. They had Bill Koll the 1st guy to win b2b NCAA OW awards. The 2nd was Dan Hodge. So until Nichols started winning NCAA titles for Ames, in 1965, the Pathers were the school in Iowa. Times change...

Somewhere in the early sixties UNI dropped to DII and didnt return to DI until sometime in the eighties. All through the forties and the fifties UNI had multiple champions on an almost yearly basis. Thier first and only NCAA champ since returning to Div I is Tony Davis in 2000. I think that list will start to get longer sooner rather than later with the kind of kids and the coaching staff they have up there.

Here are some big names from wrestlings past that wrestled at UNI.

    Division I
    Bill Koll 3Xer
    Bill Nelson 3Xer
    Bill Smith 2Xer
    Kieth Young 3Xer
    Bill Weick 2Xer

    Division II
    Don Parker 2Xer
    Kent Osboe 2Xer
Jim Miller 2Xer (Current Wartburg DivIII HC)
    Ken Snyder 2Xer
    Gary Bentrim 3Xer
    Kirk Myers 3Xer

Keith Poolman 1Xer but HOF referee

Bill Dotson won both DI and DII titles in 1963.

I actually remember attending a UNI/Iowa meet where it came down to the last match. But that was back "in the time".

It came down to the last match in the 2006-2007 season, so not that terribly long ago it happened.

I was at that one too. Just about crapped myself.

Actually, the one that I was referring to I believe was in '75-76. We had to light the field house with candles.

Now I hope people understand why I have come to hate trying to predict a lineup!

I said that the only "for sures" were Bonin 157, Wolf, 174, and Loder 184. Well, the new roster is up and going for UNI and Bonin is listed at 165 for this season.

He WAS listed as 165 for all season last year too, but the roster wasn't updated very well last year. I have to assume that it should be properly updated this year, so not sure what that means for Bonin.

I went to UNI, but am a Hawkeye fan. Actually, the only time I ever cheered for UNI was when I had my friend wrestle for them while I was going to college there. UNI is always a Hawk favorite probably because of the proximity to Iowa City, and like others have said they have never actually really been a challenge in the past. While, ISU fans continue to believe that they are on the same level as Iowa and are a big rival. That is probably the difference.
