Thread: Religion in Wrestling Looking for some help guys

Default Religion in Wrestling Looking for some help guys

I'm researching religion in wrestling. I've found quite a few Christians and I've interviewed Coach John Petty of Northwestern College and I'm also going to interview Jim Gruenwald hopefully tonight. They are both very strong Christians. I'm also thinking of contacting Justin Ruiz or Andrew Hochstrasser because of their mormon contributions.

However, I'm having trouble finding American wrestlers of other religions. Do you know of any Jewish wrestlers? Any Islamic? Buddist? Anything else of the sort. Athiest?

Let me know, I appreciate it. Thanks.

Scott Schatzman, who wrestled at Northwestern, and coached at Mizzou and Columbia, is Jewish. I'm not sure on how devout he is or anything, nor am I sure what he's up to these days...

Lindsey Durlacher's Jewish ... another one to go along with to go in tandem with Gruenwald, since you've got past World Teamers.

I will smash your face into a car windshield and then take your mother, Dorothy Mantooth, out to a nice seafood dinner and never call her again!

Tell me about it, this morning, I woke up and I shit a squirrel, but what I can't get is the damn thing is still alive. So now, I've got a shit covered squirrel running around my office and I don't know what to name it.

Alex Tsirtsis prays to the porcelain god quite often.

My guess is that there are lots of Jewish and some Islamic wrestlers, but probably many fewer in the Midwest. Many Jewish wrestlers may identify as Jewish culturally, but may not practice it. Some Islamic countries, like Iran, have incredibly strong wrestling traditions.

Historically, the great Wrestler Henry Wittenberg was one of the best ever. Passed away a few years ago. A Olympic gold medal winner, he led the U.S. team to the Olympic and Maccabiah Games.
As for Christian wrestlers in this country, historically, they are numerous, including Ben Peterson, Tim Johnson, and Mark Manning. My guess is that the Fellowship of Cristian Athletes can give you a huge list.

Well, SE Michigan has the largest Islamic population in the country, and Chicago has a pretty big Jewish population, as does St. Louis, so I think you might be able to find some Midwestern Jews and Muslims. Durlacher and Schatzman are both from the Midwest.

I know that Champ was kidding about Tsirtsis, but he has a Greek name. I wonder if he is Greek Orthodox.
