cpeake-That's because Iowa appearing was the difference between the event making and losing money, as they brought, under the old format, the lion's share of fans. That wasn't the case with Penn State, either last year or this year. That's where all of the outrage with Iowa came from, at least from the person I look at in the mirror every morning.

If the tournaments heartbeat is contingent on a specific team being there then there is probably something fundamentally wrong with the tournament. It is not Iowa's job to be the savior of all things wrestling. It is also not the state of Iowa's job to be the lifebreath of the sport. Maybe other teams fans should think about showing up to an event once in a while. I understand that it was held in Cedar Falls, but no matter where it was held you could count on Iowa having more than its share of fans there.

All this BS about Iowa not showing up making the tournament a money loser needs to stop. It may have happened that way but the reason the tournament didnt make money does not rest on Iowa's shoulders. It rests on the tournament directors shoulders for not making it an event that can stand on it's own. Hopefully that change has been made.

I think it should be in the UNI dome. It can easily sellout CHA, Hilton, or Wells Fargo on the 1st day

Gold--I don't know if someone else will be responding to this, but I've communicated with someone on the coaching staff about this in the past and the coaching staff struggles with the new format. There is no idea of ducking the competition, but the new 2-week format is problematic for a variety of reasons. As a fan I would love to see them there. But they have their concerns about it.

Peoples reaction to Iowa not attending last year leads me to believe that it's all about making money. So if they want to maximize their revenue the finals better be held in Iowa City or Des Moines. I have no problem with making money, try to do it myself from time to time, however, don't get mad at Iowa for making the tournament a loser then hold the finals at Rutgers or some lame place out east. Everyone knows that's not where the support is. Remember the NCAA's at Albany? I don't but I've been told it was not well attended.

I think that Iowa and Iowa State fans would drive to UNI for this meet. Almost any destination in Iowa would get a decent crowd if the the 3 Div. I schools in Iowa are wrestling there.
I also think that having it at UNI this year is a nice "Thank you" to the Cedar Valley area for hosting National Duals all these years. They'll miss the revenue that National Duals brought to Cedar Falls each January. That's not exactly a busy time in Waterloo, which few would call a tourist destination at any time of year.

I do like your thinking about Des Moines, though. Why must a Regional be on a participating school's campus?

I love the new format, but I wish that one of the qualifying tournaments would have been held out west.

Agreed, I was a little confused when I checked out the groups and saw the Gopher's are going to be at the one hosted by Rutgers. I could be reading into this a bit too much, but it seemed like there is an effort to spread out the "expected" winners. Iowa, MN, OK State, and Cornell are all in different regions. That seems to make sense except for send MN out East....but I am liking the matchups it presents.

Of course with graduations effecting many teams and the potential for injuries always prevalent, none of these regional's are locked up yet. Just look at the run Va Tech went on last year at National Duals.....that was fun to watch, regardless of who you support.

I get the impression that they're trying to make national duals more like the NCAA basketball tournament which spreads out the 'expected' winners and has regionals that have nothing to do with the participating school's locations.
There's no such thing as a pretty good aligator wrestler.
