Thread: NCAA Teams practice on Weekends?

Default NCAA Teams practice on Weekends?

What are the rules for how many days a week ncaa teams can practice ? Or is it up to the coach ? I was thinking that it would be 5 days a week since meets typically happen over the weekend but there is a certain number of practices that have to be held before the first meet .

There are restrictons on the day that official practices can start at the beginning of the season (meaning coaches in the room with the wrestlers). There are restrictions on the number of practices per week (again, coaches in with the wrestlers, though they can be on weekdays or weekends). There are restrictions on total number of hours or official practice time.

So yes, though it is not directly stated - there is a limit of how many practices can occur before the first meet. The actual number will vary based on when the first meet occurs.

Blueblood, does what you said mean that the wrestlers can stay after practice or come in early as long as coaches aren't there? And do unpaid coaches or volunteers violate any of that?

Generally, 20 hours a week, with a minimum of one day off per week. Practice cannot start before October 10th (New rule, passed as part of proposal 2010-97), and competition cannot start before November 1st (same proposal).

The exclusion from participating before November 1st includes unattached competition.

I think my memory is holding on this one, though I will try to confirm:
Official coaches - Head, assistants, and volunteer are allowed to directly work with the team. They can be at official practices but can be around "unofficial workouts".
Other coaches (club coaches, resident athletes) are not allowed to be at official practices. They are in a little more of a gray area for unofficial workouts.
Off hand, I don't remember in which group the "director of operations" falls.

Further, there is the loophole that alumni can come back and do occasional workouts with current team members. I don't think "occasional" is clearly defined, and I think there is a pretty big difference in how different coaching staffs choose to interpret it.

Ok . So what are the rules on pre-season/post-season conditioning ? Is there a limited amount of days/hours a week ?

Iowa interprets this to mean alumni must not practice with them at least 3 minutes out of a ten year period... ;-)

Too bad for Iowa so many of their great alums have d1 coaching jobs elsewhere.
To avoid criticism say nothing, do nothing, be nothing.
