I thought that the whole deal was that Dylan and Andrew want to graduate together? I think it's silly to redshirt him as well since he is clearly ready, but it just seemed like he'd take a year.

I think him wrestling could cinch up the title, if he doesn't it will be a real dog fight.

As I understand it, yes--the twins do want to graduate together. But there's also the factor of weight. I don't think A Alton can make 141 and still be strong anymore (like Sponsellor down at 157 last year). With Molinaro at 149 for another year the redshirt makes sense. Yes, if A Alton could wrestle again at 141 that would make a very deep team next year, but I don't think it's going to happen.

Andrew @ 141 would make PSU stronger IF he could make that weight. I don't think he will be able to all year, hence he takes the RS this year. Dylan at 157 is NOT a given. You will have English there as well as Vollrath both very improved, plus maybe Fischer. And that is all dependent on DT moving up.

KR--you're closer to the situation there than I am, but my sources indicate that it's a done deal that Taylor is moving up to 165. As I put in another post, I agree that D Alton is not a lock for the 157 spot. He hasn't yet seemed to have broken out like A Alton has, but he could make a lot of progress in a year. Can Fischer make 157? I didn't even have him in the mix there.

Cael stated publicly that any move up in weight would not be decided upon until after the summer & Quentin told me the same thing. I know DT has been hitting the weight room but I am content to wait to here what the coaching staff says. I have Fischer @ 165 but if DT is there I could see him trying to get down to battle for a spot.

I just lost my entire 157 write up. And I'm pissed about it.

    use word my friend...

I must admit I'm disappointed and can't wait to read whatever you are able to salvage in your mind from the previous write up. If i laugh half as much as last time I'll be in a very good place.

    157:

    1. Kyle Dake, Cornell
    2. Derek St. John, Iowa
    3. Jason Welch, Northwestern
    4. Jesse Dong, Virginia Tech
    5. Walter Peppelman, Harvard
    6. Albert White, Oklahoma State
    7. Jackson Morse, Illinois
    8. David Bonin, Northern Iowa

Round of 12: James Fleming, Clarion; Josh Demas, Ohio State; Dylan Alton, Penn State; Kyle John, Maryland

I'm not sure if he'll be able to make 157 given the fact that when I last saw him in college, he seemed to have a 149 lb. New Jersian attached to him. Also, there is a strong possibility that Dake takes an Oly Redshirt. In fact, initially, I had St. John winning this weight because I thought Dake was more likely to take the Oly RS, but Rob Koll's interview insinuates otherwise. Either way, he's a clear favorite at this weight even given how good St. John looked. He's great in all facets from a skills perspective, his main issue always seems to be healthily cutting weight and the related gas tank issues. One would think the move up would help him, but he was wrestling 163 with International weigh ins (and doing VERY well at that weight), so who knows? He may be at 165. He may have a serious struggle making 157 this year. I want to know what the hell this kid eats.

Confession time: I wasn't a believer in Derek St. John. I thought he could be good, but not great. I didn't think he'd seriously challenge for an NCAA title in his career. I expected multiple AA's, but never a true "A" wrestler. And after the Midlands, I felt I was looking good to be right. But then Derek St. John sort of ignited. All of a sudden, he was busting up nearly everyone he wrestled, including the impressive and dominating pin over Paul Young and giving David Taylor his two toughest matches that didn't involve a nearside cradle from neutral. He developed a really tough (though not particularly point-scoring) ride from top and always had a good game from neutral and high level scrambling. His biggest weakness was from bottom, but by the end of the season he was much better at getting out. Honestly, he started to look a little bit like the reincarnation of Jay Borschel. I think he's got a real good shot at MULTIPLE championships, even this year, but I think Dake wins provided he's here and the cut is similar to this year's cut. It should be mentioned there are rumors St. John is going 157, but I really think that would be mistake in my opinion, but then I thought Oliver should go 141.

Remember when there was serious debate about who was better, Jason Welch or Michael Chaires? Ahh, the hilarious old days. Welch spent the last season not only laughing at that debate, but potentially burying the old "Welch vs. Winston" debate. Welch is a notch or two below St. John and Dake respectively, but he is a title contender, and Winston is not and Chaires is...not even listed on the UVA website, so I have no idea. Much like in music, you can clearly see the influence of Ben Askren on Jason Welch. Funking on every shot, I'm pretty sure he gets in scrambles with his Jack Daniels in the offseason Sometimes it burns him, but he's supremely comfortable there. Unfortunately, both guys above him here are better in that area. St. John showed it head to head, and Dake just is, trust me. I think Welch is a notch above the next two guys, though.

Let's get this out of the way now: Dong is another word for penis, and that's just funny to look at. Hehehe, looking at penis. Ok, now, moving on to serious discussion. I think this is the year that Dong finally penetrates the veil separating him from being an AA. Dong spent most of last season dominating asses during a redshirt season, but eventually Dresser unsheathed Jesse and inserted him into the lineup. After coming out of RS, Dong really seemed to have a harder time getting up for matches like he had earlier in the season. He was rock solid for the rest of the season, but then just seemed a little soft at the tournament again. Ok, no more penis puns. Dong's best when he's on top (except that one), really able to pound opponents out, while he's mostly just tough in neutral. I don't think Dong is really a Top 3 level wrestler, but the empty nature of this weight really opens the backdoor for Dong to finally burst through and finally mount the podium.

Walter Peppelman is basically a lesser version of Dong. He's not quite as good on top, not quite as good in neutral, etc. But I think Peppelman's ceiling is higher, so he could surpass Dong here. That said, Peppelman just seems to get sloppy fairly often, and I think Dong slips ahead of him

I wrote Stephen Swan here earlier just to check if you guys were paying attention. Albert White is the presumptive starter here. He's looked like a very decent wrestler (high praise, I know, but hey, the weight sucks) when he's been in the line up, but he has health issues. I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt on the health issue and I think he makes the podium in the absence of any real threats.

So....Jackson Morse...if we're at the Jackson Morse portion of the evening, you know the weight sucks on paper. A stud recruit, he didn't show real superstar potential last year, only that he was "good." So why did I pick him? Well, he just got Mark Perry, one of the hot young assistants in the country, and...um....he took David Taylor down twice in a match? I don't know, what do you want from me? I'm picking Jackson Morse to make All-American! He went 2-3 in Big 10 Duals last year! The cupboard it bare (which I suppose is better than the nonexistent cupboard that it looks like at 165).

David Bonin is tough in all areas, but not stand out. He's got a good coach in Schwab and showed improvement throughout the season. The empty nature of this weight is carrying him onto the podium in my predictions, as I expect a turnip is going to be the 7 seed. But really, who knows?
