Re: National Duals Moved to February
Herkey-I'll be happy to oblige, in part. This Penn State schedule makes Iowa's schedule last year look like murderers' row.
The reason why I took shots at Iowa last year had NOTHING to do with them "ducking" the event. It had more to do with the fact that, in years' past, when the event has been at the UNIDome, the National Duals' viability was based entirely on Iowa's presence (or, last year, lack thereof). With the decentralization of the event this year, that's not the case, where one school is going to be the difference between profitability and the Red Ink River.
My bashing of Iowa was simply related to that. As a matter of fact, and this is the first time I'm mentioning this publicly, I even sent an e-mail to Mike Moyer complaining about Iowa's treatment in the rankings in the week after National Duals. I didn't think it was right that Iowa drop three spots, including behind another non-attendee (Oklahoma), after not losing a single match.
FYI, Herkey, I'm strongly considering taking the trip to Carver-Hawkeye this year for your dual with Oklahoma State (I believe January 8th). Penn State should be wrestling them as well, but my understanding is that they've had a disagreement dating back to the Troy Sunderland regime over Oklahoma State refusing to travel to Happy Valley.
But in short, that was the substance of my issue with Iowa not attending National Duals, as they wrestled a difficult schedule nonetheless. We CAN'T say the same thing about Penn State this year.

Thanks Pirate.
I think you should make the trip to Iowa City for the OSU dual this year. It won't be as nasty as the PSU dual will be but we've got a long history with them and emotions are usually running high and triggered easily. Plus OSU will have a decent team this year and they stopped our winning streak last year. I always love it when they come to town, except they seem to beat us more than I would like. It's a trip you should make. Then the year after make sure you get to town for the PSU dual. Minnesota will be a good one too, although I don't know where it will be this year, yet.
If you've never been to a "big time" dual in Iowa City, put it on your bucket list. There's nothing in wrestling like it, that I've experienced.

Per willyman, the Minnesota dual will be January 29 in Iowa City.

How do you be returning team national champions and not go to the national duals though? it just seems weak to me...

I think it was pretty smart in the case of Iowa last year. Brands knew that the team would be taking it's lumps individually at that point in the season and decided that having extra training sessions would be better for the minds of the young wrestlers than possibly suffering some devestating individual losses at National Duals.
I'm glad he skipped last year after seeing the improvement the team made from Midlands to NCAA's.

Re: National Duals Moved to February
The major difference is PSU is not only the returning champs but also the favorites for next year vs being a team with 8 new starters ranked out of the top 10. I don't care where it was held if Iowa were returning champs and clear favorites for the next season and skipped out there would be a large outcry.
