Thread: Proposed rules changes for 2011-2012

I like the rules and the myriad of options our wrestlers have to score. Tilts are exciting, pins are exciting, Jordan Burroughs double legging the same guy 12 times is exciting.

A pin is the most dominant form of victory we would all agree, no? There is often a wide disparity in the two wrestlers abilities when a pin occurs. When two wrestlers of similar ability(or a slight mismatch) wrestle it is very difficult to pin someone who is close to you in ability, so you must learn how to win without pinning. Scoring points with take downs and turns then become the next resort.

Really by your logic choosing down in the second or third period would be stalling since that would be voluntarily putting yourself in the position furthest from pinning. It really doesn't make that much sense to me.

Spider draws a philosophical line in the sand. I've read where some want the pin totally eliminated. Back in the day, I think of wrestling in the back yard with my uncle long before I knew what a singlet was. That's real grass roots wrestling, I suppose you could say. Conversely you have the Takedown Contests, AKA freestyle, which is a more artificial conception.

It is the case, though, that most of our sports are artificial conceptions. Some are magical in how they turned out (sandlot baseball for instance--the PERFECT spectator sport). Track and swimming are natural, with some exceptions.

I like the tech fall. At some point running up the score just ceases to be a contest. The logic about "learning from getting embarrassed" also applies to getting TF'd, and is better for spectators.

I like the stalling call for escaping from a hold by going out-of-bounds. Someone complained that it is too close to the freestyle pushing out of bounds. However, I think many have expressed that they would like to see folkstyle (college and high school) have a version of that. I think this is an excellent version to put in place.

Good points, VA, especially the one about choosing bottom, for which I have no reply. Still, even with evenly matched wrestlers, their objective should be trying for the pin, not just trying to score points. I still feel that rules that reward moves not designed to improve your position towards a pin (like tilts) are contrary to the philosophy of the sport - at least as it used to be. It's a different sport now and maybe that's where the disagreement arises.

I wonder what percentage of pins happen from feet-to-back takedowns or in mad scrambles, rather than from turns from the top position.

Good question, but I would ask how many times after a wrestler lets his opponent up does he go for the pin from neutral rather than for a conventional takedown.
