    I liked the article. I am not a Mormon and not an ISU or Penn St. fan. It seemed to me like a good interview and that's it. That is his approach to coaching and it probably is influenced by his upbringing, but it didn't seem to toot a Mormon horn. Brands, Gable and Smith seem to have a different approach, so be it. Whether you like that newspaper or not, Sanderson's approach did work.

Bobby Douglas was pushed out and has reason to be bitter ISU fans even more so, but Cael's a guy with ambition and drive and did not get 4 NCAA championships and Olympic gold by being meek.

    Really no controversy revealed here.
    I can tell you for a fact that Cael wasn't recruited by PSU. He called them in the 11thhour, when PSU already had their hire in place.

    Bubba told me he wanted to go @ 149 his last year. ISU didn't enter the picture.

Think about any profession, literally any if you're working at McDonalds and you get lunch at Burger King on your day off and they have a sign that says they are hiring and you ask for an application, you fill it out and they tell you they will give you a managers job at Burger King, yet at McDonalds you're going to be flipping burgers for who knows how long behind the managers already there. I honestly think Cael has/had a lot of respect for Bobby and did not want to have him fired, but at the same time he also wanted a head coaching job. I do not like Cael all that much at all to be honest either, but I must say the article and some folks are making him look like a back stabber like he went in and said "Fire Bobby, make me the head coach or I'm leaving" which in a way he did but I think it went more like "Look guys there is a great job opportunity at OSU that I've been offered, but I'd really love to stay here and coach but I can't pass up a head coaching position" So then the AD freaked and forced Bobby out and hired Cael before they lost the face of their program for the last decade almost.

    I also agree that they could have and should have let Cael go to OSU and let Bobby stay as long as he wanted (probably only a couple more years anyway) then when he came to them and said he was ready to retire, they could have then asked Cael to come back to ISU. In the end it was a crappy job by the athletic department at ISU (which when you think about it, it's hard to blame them for not wanting to lose their 4X undefeated NCAA Champ and Olympic Champ who is young, has a great name to recruit with and shown he knows how to win everyday.

    I don't love Cael, but I don't think it's right to make it look like he was the one who made ISU fire Bobby and hire him.

    I'd bet that after Bubba knew he was going to have to leave PSU he would have loved to have gone to ISU, he just got lucky that ASU wanted him, at least that's my opinion.
    Bubba wanted to go some place warm & he was reunited with his HS coach. Sorry Ames wasn't on the menu.

    People also forget this one fact b/c they looking at the NCAA results but Cael did win 3 consecutive B12 titles. No ISU coach had ever done that. Not Douglas or Nichols. Douglas had finished in the top 5 at the NCAAs in years. Hiring Cael definitely improved ISU's standing at the time. As an AD I think that most of the time that is what you look for, FORWARD MOTION & IMPROVEMENT. Cael gave them that.

    Iowa State has had an on going problem keeping good coaches. They just don't have the money.

    Cael also happened to catch those Big 12 titles when OK State was uncharacteristically weak. Just sayin.

    Who do you think weakened them?

    Cael doesn't just help his own team, he can actually make entire programs falter.

    I have accepted the FACT that anything positive about PSU and/or Cael (esp the latter) WILL BE contradicted, diminished or discounted by 99% (ok maybe 98%) of Hawk fans...

    1) Anything he has done as a Coach is DESERVED of Criticism;
    2) Anything he has done in a positive fashion is never as good as anything someone else has done;
    3) Criticizing Anything Hawkeyes have done is deserving of capital punishment or character assassination;
    4) All praise of Hawkeye activities is certainly deserved & worthy of a kow-tow & genuflect & worship...
