Thread: Tournament of Champions 2007-2011

    Another cool thread idea...

125: 09 Nickerson (Was a huge advocate of Nickerson as the best guy from his sophomore year on, didn't win this title with the most flash but I still think he's the best guy)

133: 11 Oliver (Hardest weight for me to choose a guy at. As much as I wanted to pick Ness, Oliver nearly beat him last year and Oliver this year is 2 or 3 times the guy he was last year)

141: 09 Jaggers (As much as I think Dake is the evolutionary version of Jaggers, and as much as Russell just doesn't lose I can't go against Jaggers. Was utterly out of his mind at the tournament this year)

149: 08 Metcalf (Even though he was a better wrestler in 2010, if you win the greatest weight class of all time you're my pick)

157: 09 Burroughs (Ran the gauntlet in an utterly ridiculous weight class)

165: 11 Burroughs (No one stops the double, Perry can't turn him)

174: 07 Askren (No doubter, historically good season here by Askren)

184: 09 Herbert (Another easy call, taking the Herbert season where he beat the undefeated defending champ in the final)

197: 10 Varner (Finally comfortable with his offense and no one could score on him)

285: 07 Konrad (Similar to 174, no one else is even close here)

Between the two Perry is a combined 2-9 or so. Great point.

Neither are even close to being on the level that Burroughs is on from neutral.

In the finals? 1 time Hendricks, 1 time Perry. In regular season 7 times Hendricks.

I wouldn't go that far, but I basically agree with you. You could say that Perry's neutral offense is nowhere near that of Burroughs and that Hendricks is not at that level either offensively. Still, it would be an interesting battle in neutral since both Perry and Hendricks have phenomenal defense and just know how to win matches. I also think that Perry isn't a great match-up for Burroughs who has the toughest time with wrestlers like Metcalf and Howe. Burroughs hasn't faced anyone as tough on top as Perry, but I still don't see him getting turned. Jordan's top wrestling is underrated as well so RT is unlikely to be a factor.

Perry only beat Hendricks once as I recall and that with a late rally. Not to take anything away from Perry; just for the record.

I know that but who owns the belt currently?

125- Troy Nickerson Cornell (2009) a healthy Nickerson takes all
133- Matthew Valenti Penn (2007) - Jordan Oliver can't handle the power of Valenti
141- Kyle Dake (2010) the freak breaks through Russell's defense
149- Darrion Caldwell NC St. (2009) - Dake can't stop a 100% Caldwell, we know the Metcalf story
157- Jordan Burroughs Nebraska (2009) unstoppable in 09
165- Jordan Burroughs Nebraska (2011) may be the best over the past 5 years
174- Ben Askren Missouri (2007) no contest
184- Jake Herbert Northwestern (2009) would have beat himself in 2007
197- Jake Varner IA St (2010) Davis or Varner, Davis or Varner ....hmmmm yeah it's Varner
Hwt- Cole Konrad Minnesota (2007) no one could handle King Kong Konrad in '07 and the couldn't handle him today
