Thread: Another Missouri wrestler gone?

    Default Another Missouri wrestler gone?

I've asked a few time on this board about Willie Saxton and no one would respond.

I was forced to search "the other site" for the first time in months.

I was deeply disappointed to read that he left Missouri for greener pasteurs.

IMO, this kids was on of the best kept secrets coming out of high school.

After watching him at high school nationals, I had him pegged for multiple AA.

I'm not trashing the Missouri program, but I think asking for an explanation in not unreasonable.

    What's the scoop?

Maybe this happens everywhere, but Primus, Saxton and Dolan are all kids from my area that have left town for Missouri and haven't found much success.

Seriously, Dolan has wrestled for about ten minutes. If you want to jump on Missouri's back for Primus and Saxton, feel free, but get off their nuts about Dolan. It's December, for Pete's sake!

Primus is still a mystery to me. I talked to him a lot over the summer, he seemed to be working hard to get his weight close to 141. At one of the first practices, he told me he was 145, so he was going to start eating a little more. I have no idea why he quit. Maybe he couldn't beat Hoehn and couldn't beat Sherry, but even then they're both seniors. As for Willie, he's another nice kid that for whatever reason seemed unable to make the cut to 133 and couldn't beat Hoehn. He got a full-ride offer from ND of Ohio and that was too good to pass up. Best of luck to both these young men. I also thought Vince Hannon had great potential, I hope he ends up somewhere else and does well. We had so many 141's I guess we were bound to lose a few. With Hucke and Farinella coming off redshirt next year, you can imagine how crowded that weight was. What we really need is a true 149lber. Wiest is small for the weight and Kyle Bradley will be a true freshman next year.

Not every program is for every wrestler. My opinion is that guys should find the best overall fit rather than just the best team with the best record in the toughest conference. Some wrestlers work better with some coaches. Find the coach who inspires you the most at the school that seems most compatible, academically and personally. Asking for an explanation for why they left may yield not one explanation, but three different ones.

Part of my frustration comes from seeing PA kids with great potential choosing schools far way only to never be heard from again.

Although, I place part of the blame on PA colleges for not recruiting these kids enough. But, that's another post for another day.

I personally never coached the kids mentioned in this thread, but I have coach high school wrestlers who went out of state on scholarships.

Being away from home during the freshman and even sophomore years can be really tough for certain types of kids. From my experience, college coaches can be insensitive at times. Being in a far away state can only add to the stress.

I don't know a thing about the Missouri coaches or the program. However, from their recent track record, I'm a bit suspicious.

I have been following Willie too. He definitely took the Ohio State Tournament by storm his senior year, and I'm surprised he hasn't cracked Missouri's lineup. Zach Schuller is another kid that went there who didn't last long--but I don't know anything about the Missouri staff and am not saying either departure is there fault.

Where are you from ground and pound?

    I'm from the Pittsburgh suburbs.

I've been an asst. coach for year and a volunteer asst. more recently.

We see quite a few Ohio Valley teams at tournaments throughout the year. They always have some tough kids. If I was a college recruiter, I'd check that area out. They are definitely underrated. Saxton was a stud. Again, I don't know him, but I'd bet most PA colleges didn't even know his name.

I grew up in the OVAC (Cambridge). At Cambridge, we had a good 5 years of real talent (that wasn't developed as much as it could have been), but the youth program died down and now we are seeing the effects of that.

There is definitely some talent in the OVAC, though--but it just sort of pails in comparison to the talent density of northern Ohio
