A TD with 10-15 seconds or less is usually going to be worth two points, while a TD with more than 30 seconds is only going to be worth one point because if the wrestlers are evenly matched an escape usually occurs.

I know this is not always the case, but just goes to illustrate how the Folkstyle scoring can make a match seem a lot closer on the scoreboard than it seems on the mat.
Amen to that. This drives me crazy also, especially since I never wrestled folkstyle and am not real familiar with it. The one I remember from this year is Reader/Lewnes, where Reader basically manhandled his opponent but ended up winning by one point. What's funny is that a lot of folkstyle fans seem to complain about freestyle scoring being unfair because of the "last point wins" tiebreaker, but folkstyle is essentially the same- late takedowns are worth more.

To be fair this mostly seems to hapen at only the highest levels of wrestling where the opponents are so closely matched a tiny difference decides the match.
I have wondered if the guys at this level are good enough to use this strategy and go extra hard to finsih a takedown near the end of a period.
Iowa wrestlers seem to be masters of this. If they are taken dwon near the end of a period they seem to still be able to get and if they get their own takedown near the end they do what is needed to rde out the period.

FS tiebreakers are still ridiculous. I don't get why they can't let tie period count as ties now that they do the best 2 of 3. Save the tiebrakers for the third period or develop and use the clinch only to decide amtches that are 0-0-3 or 1-1-1.

Is Alton going to be able to make 141 next year though? Isnt he sucking quite a bit to make it down there? Also, wasnt there talk that Andrew will RS next year and Dylan will wrestle?

Can't speak for Andrew but my understanding was that if Dylan wrestles next year, it'll probably be up at 157.

Too bad for David Taylor. Seemed like a good kid with lots of potential to be successful. Maybe he slips into the lineup the year after

    It is a shame.

At least he's making the most of his opportunity before he gets pushed out of the line up next year...

I'm sure they do. Top level freestylers do it all the time, so why not college wrestlers? I used to train with an African champion who openly stated this was his strategy.

You won't find me defending FIA's craptastic tiebreakers. It just bothers me that some posters (more on other boards than here) will go completely overboard bashing freestyle wrestling, without recognizing the inherent weaknesses in the scoring of folkstyle.

There's something awesome about matches (and not just in wrestling) decided in sudden-death overtime. Canada used to have endless overtime, which made for some great matches. In some local high school tournament I wrestled a 14 minute final before winning with a big arm throw... good times. Two friends of mine wrestled a 16 minute gold medal match. And one of my favorite moments as a fan was watching Dehamel upset two national team members back-to-back in really long overtime matches. The clinch, and those odd folkstyle tiebreakers, just can't compete with those kind of epic bouts. We don't need tiebreakers- wrestle until someone scores!
