My take on the Ruth match was that Ruth made the decision with about 50 seconds left that he was going to try and ride Glasser out for the major, and possibly lock up his far-side for the pin or back points. Ruth rode him tough for the next 49 seconds but Glasser was strong enough, and in good enough shape to get the escape in the final second (Not because of a perceived "lack of effort" on Ruth's part). In retrospect, given the ease Ruth was getting takedowns, he should have let him go at the 50 second mark and taken him down another time or two to secure the major.

141: M. Thorn dec Alton 8-3 Minnesota (Thorn utilizes his scrambling ability and his skill from the top and wins a comfortable decision)

149: Molinaro maj Zilverburg 8-7 Minnesota (So long as Molinaro doesn't waste time on top he should get a methodical style major)

157: Taylor fall Grygelko/Mincey 13-8 Penn State (Whoever it is, Taylor get the stick)

165: Yohn dec Kemerer 13-11 Penn State (Despite the fact that Cody hasn't been blowing people away recently he should win here)

174: Ruth dec Glasser 16-11 Penn State (Ruth just too much of an athlete, Glasser will do well to avoid bonus points)

184: Wright dec Steinhaus 19-11 Penn State (One toss up match to the Nittany Lions)

197: Yohn maj Ruggear/Ortega 19-15 Penn State (I wonder if we see Yohn make his debut against Biondo on Friday, or if he's held out until this match. Either one should be a good comeback opponent)

285: Nelson dec Wade 19-18 Penn State (And one toss up match to the Gophers)

Minimizing bonus points will be big here for the Gophers. Should be a really close, really fun dual to watch.
nice call...if you would have called for Frank to dec instead of major u would have nailed it.

He also missed 84 and heavy KR.

I like that the guy who beat a tough opponent by 7 is the reason PSU lost.

I was kind of disappointed that the refs gave Molinaro that break when he was CLEARLY gassed and not injured in any way. Z had him on the ropes.

Also, Nelson was frustrating to watch. He constantly held Wade's ankle and KEPT him on top by doing so. LOL.. why would you try to stand up with your opponent on top of you and help him by holding his leg there? More than once he could have shaken Wade loose as he was riding high.

I thought the ref was consistent in calling stalemates on both sides, but he had no clue on calling stalling. When it became apparent that there was nothing wrong with Frank the Tank, I think he should have ordered the PSU staff off the mat and Frank back to the middle.
As for Taylor's pin, I've been a referee and no body has the view that the ref has, so I don't buy a missed pin.
I agree with you on Wright.....I was shocked. He was SO good 2 years ago.
He looked good 8 months ago beating Lewnes. 2xs.

I am sure both coaches talked to their teams about missed opportunities to win the match for their team as well as talking to them about getting some points that made the difference.

Ruth was obviously wasn't aware that he only had 3 seconds left in the 1st period when he cut Glasser loose. IF he would have rode him out, PSU wins. Stupid. Byers on the radio was saying that the ref missed the fall on DT's match. Jeff pretty much calls it like he sees it for either team. Also I thought that unsportsmanlike calls got a TEAM point deducted not a individual point awarded. David Thorn's actions could have cost the Gophers the dual.

In total points scored on the mat PSU had the edge 62-57 thanks mostly to David Taylor. That means that on average each match was decided by 1/2 point per.

The TD battle was 14-14. The bouts were split 5-5 like a lot of folks predicted. 2 bonus matches for PSU (TF & Major) & 3 bonus for Minnesota (3 majors). It really doesn't get too much more evenly matched then this all the way around.

With Sonny coming back you have to like Minnesota's chances vs Iowa & @ the B10s. They could have 4 or 5 B10 finalists easily.

If PSU is going to have a chance @ B10s Frank & Ed are going to have to score bonus & Quentin needs to return to form. I am starting to think that he should have stayed @ 174. Ed told mehe would prefer to be @ 184. A switch this late is pretty much out of the question though.

    Gophers?
I called it pretty close, only missed really the Nelson/Wade 2-0 Waltz on my dancecard.

Quentin needs a better uppper-middle weight coach like Sunderland.

I thought yesterday that in particular Big Thorn, Zilverburg, C. Yohn and Steinhaus looked really great. Little Yohn did not have one second in that match where he didn't look in complete control.
